I took my colt to the range today. No problems with it what so ever. Function flawlessly until the end of the day. So I shot it until the magazine was empty, ejected the magazine, so now action is open and no magazine. I put the pistol down and went to chat with some friends. When I came back, I loaded a full magazine and began firing. It jammed on the 4th or 5th round, and I rack the slide to try and eject the jamming round and the slide went further back than usual, past the slide lock, and now the slide is totally jammed and stuck. It won't move at all no matter what I try to do. Did I do something wrong or is this a defective pistol? Please help!

I have a poor track record in trying to help, and I don't have much experience with 1911s (I guess that's what you meant by "Colt"), but I'll begin.

First, please let us know that the mag is out of the pistol and the cartridge in the chamber has been removed. Second, how much further back is the slide? Can you take pictures?

Does the slide release depress? Can you see the slide lock? Is there a bit of brass (or some kind of foreign matter) torn from an ejected casing stuck between slide and frame?

It's hard to do this without the pistol in hand. Please supply some more information. Maybe one of the 1911 people here can tell you what's happened right away.

Sounds like the barrel bottom lugs have sheared off - rare but it happens. You'll need a serious visit to the smith. If you can move the barrel around, especially if it can be rotated any, this is a stronger possibility. Other option is a broken recoil spring. Unload as suggested by MTF, then release the springtube and recoil spring, pull the bushing. If you can get this far, you may be able to diagnose what has happened. Good Luck.
