Not sure whether it's a good idea or not, but I'd be VERY mindful of the overall length. I think the Mare's Leg is already right on the wire (or just under) but still considered a non-restricted firearm. I don't think I'd want to even reduce it's length by a hair, and risk having slip into "restricted" status inadvertently.

Not the same thing, but there is a Mossberg creation that is a lever action that has an AR buttstock on it. There has been a fair amount of chatter online about this rifle, not all of it favorable.

I agree that an underfold on mares leg is questionable in the legality department.
you would be better to get the takedown version and put a youth stock on it.

the adapter i had in mind would actually be thicker than the butt plate. better yet just do the same as the M1 carbine and use cross bolt on grip and it will leave the length the same.
