With the Vortex scopes if you tighten the rings any more then 15- 18 in. lbs. the scope will screw up. I've done that twice so now I try and stay right at 15 in. lbs. with Vortex

Please post what damage to the scope by this and if vortex covered it . I can't imagine

OP - please post if retourquing fixes problem , scope or rifle screws , or if indeed your scope got pooched with such minor use

Well I just got back from shooting... Earlier today I took everything apart. Removed the stock, checked the bedding and barrel clearance, removed the rail/rings/scope. Re-installed everything as careful as possible. Still shooting absolutely wild, groups to the left, groups to the right, some high, some low... Will not hold zero, removed the bi-pod and shot off bags, nothing helped.

Buddy is going to let me borrow his Night Force NXS, that way I actually rule out if it is the scope or not. Then go from there I guess. The joys haha

My groups started wandering so I sent back two Vortex scopes and they were both replaced with new.Vortex did talk about over tightening?? 15-18 in. lbs only. So I stay at 15 in. lbs.

^^^WOW ! - I have had many what some on here call old obsolete leupold scopes (never had a problem )before intra-net times never heard of over torque
UNTILL Sako optiloc ring screws stripped . Old weaver rings got all I could give . Can't imagine how they make things so cheap anymore .

Im with you... kinda, I had a take down sauer which after the scope was mounted it torqed the action enough that the bbl would not come out.
And no the screws were not hitting the tenon.
15 to 25 inch pounds is what most ring manufactureres recommend, pretty sure its got nothing to do with the scope being that flimsy.

same LOT of ammo as the first?

I had a GECO scope on my Mauser that I inherited. When I first started trying to dial it in, it was all over the place and only hit the target twice and the backer board once after about 20 rounds.
I removed the scope and for the next 10 rounds, used the sights at 50 yards. I started hitting the target within 4 rounds. I borrowed an older, well used, scope from a buddy and I started hitting the target within three shots. I put a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x50 on it this summer and started making better inroads. It wasn't the best performance but I was on the paper every time. I had someone lap the rings and properly torque everything but I never got back to troubleshooting. The weather, retirement, moving (among other useless excuses) has kept me from fully correcting/investigating the issue.
I have used factory ammo and handloads (thanks Mike).
I have since realized that my body position has been a tad poor and it may well be my worst issue (but not my only one)
