I have a long geared cousin who put a hunk of 2X4 on his Lee Enfield for Moose hunting. Looked like hell, but it worked.
Later had a custom stock made for it.
I also have a longer length of pull, between an inch and a half and two inches longer than usual.
What I have done, is find rifles that come with a steel but plate, and put a thick pad on instead. Other than that, and my custom rifle, I usually just put up with it. I've sold rifles because of it though. That short pull on a hard kicking rifle can be brutal.
Years back there was a slip on pad you could get. also looked like hell, but it worked too.
Edit: Just checked Amazon, and ebay, those slip on pads are still out there, and they look a lot better than they used to.
