Take the rifle you’re confident with. The 308 will have no problems killing an elk I’d you put the bullet in the right spot.
 
My son shoots a 783 and it is crazy accurate,it kinda gets a little embarrassing when he is shooting just as good as me when my rifle cost a crap load more. Confidence in your rifle gets more game, so stick with the 783 until you find something prettier and just as accurate.
 
Take whichever one you feel confident with. I reckon you won’t be shooting at an Elk beyond 400 yards so either rifle should get the job done. The vitals on an elk are around 12”, so any rifle capable of 2 moa will be sufficient.
 
Thanks for your input everyone , I will take the Howa for a backup in case the Remington breaks. I may throw the good glass on the Remington as well. I won’t shoot past 200 yards anyway . Will use 168 Barnes or Hornady.

I've got 2, 783's a 308 win and a 7 rem mag. Both shoot pretty darn good.
Take the 783 if it's the better shooter.

Ye won't have to worry about the 783 breaking on your hunt. These buggers are well designed and made using the latest CNC machine tooling. They meet a good price point, but they definitely ain't a "cheap" rifle. The 783 is a sleeper of an action that lends itself well to hunting & competition use. The aftermarket is bringing out more goodies for these as well. Remington is also adding more versions of these rifles to suit market trends. They're good, reliable & strong performers.
