Just got a Smith&Wesson Mod 686.The ser.# is AEJ0000.Anyone know if the 0000 would mean the start of a year or the series of letters.

AEJ = Sometime in 1984 (I think)

0000 = Start of that prefix, no relation to the start of the year (I think)

I'm not a revolver guys, I'm just trying to help.

Possibly, but I don't want to look like an ass here. I can't tell you what came next so don't automatically assume that 0001, 0002, 0003 etc. were next in that series. Maybe it was 1111, 2222, 3333, or 1000, 2000, 3000, or 1000, 1001, 1002 etc.

Did you really get 0000 or are you trying to date it further without providing information? If so at least provide the next number (Or two) and maybe I can help further ie. AEJ-37XX.

P.S. You can always call/e-mail S&W and ask them directly. I don't think there's a fee unless you want official paperwork ($50).
