The only time I ever had rust on a gun, was a small amount that came off with a little scrubbing with a bore patch + some Hopes #9. However, other guys might have better tricks. Good luck Sir.

+1...Have done this, as well. Works really well...just remember to keep oiling, and scrub VERY lightly.

I chuck silica gel packs in the safe for this reason.
But even before you try like 0000 steel wool try just rubbing hoppes on it for a while and see what comes off.

You'd think the melonite finish would be able to withstand being in a safe for 3 years.

I have learned my lesson with stainless steel. If you use powder blast or similar and don't use break free or something after it will rust in a humid environment

Then its not really stainless steel.
High quality stainless steel has no ferrous content.

1- yes, ssteele under some circumstance could develop rust.
2- Bulldog 0000 or 000 steel wool saturated with gun oil and rub the affected area, it will not affect the finish.
