please school me in .22lr

hey all,
first off I have NEVER owned a rifle of ANY kind. shot the odd round many years ago. anyways;

been lookin for a plinker to take to the range just to get some rounds down range. not looking for anything special just something decent. been looking at a Savage or a Ruger. found these as a comparison for what Im interested

now the couple of questions I have about either of these is a scope. not sure why but I am drawn to this style of scope, I understand it may not be practical though, the truth is I just dont know

IF I am to choose something along the lines of this setup, what kind of scope mount would I need? :confused: they honestly all just look the same :HR:

hmmm, well figuring out what gun to get is a lot like dating. You can dance with a lot of ladies, but at some point you need to take one out. At that point you will start to see pretty quickly whether you like her or not. You can start her of plain and dresser up as you go along depending on your finances and taste. You'll also find that once you start dating, you will begin to meet lots of other people too, who will offer good advice as you go along.
The only real way to get started is to pick a girl you like and ask her out.
 
From one newbie to another my best advice would be to research, it maybe hard at first as you don't know what to look for but I'd say go to the websites of your local dealers look for what they have stock in 22LR wise and then read reviews on them.

Determine what you want...Bolt, Semi, Lever..

What your price range is..

and research away...there are plenty of guys here that will give their 2 cents if you ask them about a specific brand or gun. There are plenty of people on the internet and Youtube that review all kinds of guns.
 
a good website to get a bit of insight is rimfirecentral.com.pretty much covers all the different rifles out there and has a search function if you want a specific item.there is a lot of valuable info there and also a bit of BS,so make sure you get more than one perspective.every rifle has its own character,so try to choose one that suits you best and not someone else.red dot sights are very good for close to medium range shooting,absolutely great for plinking.by the way once you start shooting,you'll find that firearms are like potato chips.....you can't stop at only one.good luck,and be safe
 
Careful though...there are no inoculations for Mossberg-itis, Cooey-fever, and .22-addictions in general.

Joys out vs. cost in is the lure that will get you hooked.

Both rifles in your selection are popular in their own right, and are different too. Lots of rifles to choose from with different actions, and sizes. From the 75 year old, laser accurate Cooey single shots through to the 25rd magazine fed, spray n' play semi's. All of them can be fun. All of them can fuel an addiction too.

At 50yd , the 3.5MOA dot is going to look pretty big on the target where it will nearly cover a 6" area ,visually , making a accurate shot hard to do .
If $$$ isn't a issue , look around for a smaller 2MOA dot or a nice duplex recticule scope.

IMPO , a Cooey bolt action repeater in VG condition would make a fantastic 1st rifle
 
Do you want to shoot for accuracy or just fun?

I quickly get bored of just spraying rounds downrange, and so I sold my Ruger for a Savage MKII FV, and would never look back!

A red dot is not going to provide the accuracy that I want to get out of a rifle either. My MKII is topped with a Bushnell Trophy 4-12 and it shoots as good as many of my centrefire rifles out to 100m.
 
Welcome to the world of rimfires! Once you cross this line, you will be hooked...enter at your own risk. :) I liked the "girlfriend" analogy someone else posted, never thought of it that way. The truth is, you may or may not hit a home run with the first .22 you buy but the good news is, demand is always there for re-selling. Priority #1 is that you shoot safe and have fun, so get what feels right to you. Everything people offer here (my own advice included) will be our own biases based on our own experiences. So, take my advice...or toss it aside, your call. :) I will tell you this~like allot of people here...I have wasted allot of money arriving at where I am today.

Looking at the gear you mentioned...I have this to say;

1. Your first gun should NOT be a semi-auto. The accutrigger on that Savage is about 100x better than a 10/22 trigger. Good triggers go a LONG way towards a rifle's accuracy. A bolt action is inherently more accurate than a semi, especially with a Savage bolt compared to a 10/22. A bolt action is WAY, WAY easier to clean.

2. Forget that red dot unless you want to shoot at pop cans from a close range. Get a 1/2-decent 3-9x scope and you'll be way happier in the long run. I just bought a Vortex Crossfire II and am VERY impressed with it so far. This is the one I got, and for a .22;

Plenty of good scopes in that power range show-up used on the EE too, you should be able to get something really decent for about $150. New Crossfire IIs are all under $300 though if memory serves.

3. I like heavy barrels on .22s, but they're really meant for shooting off a rest. A bench (like at a shooting range), a bipod, shooting sticks, etc. Offhand shots are not easy, and not comfortable. That said, it's mostly what I use...and I make due. If 75% of your shooting will involve carrying it on long hikes, offhand shots, get a standard-weight barrel. If you like the heavy barrels, you should REALLY consider this model;

I love Savages, love the Accutrigger, but those plastic stocks they put on their guns are garbage. NOT simply the cheap feeling or aesthetics, rather, the geometry. They only work if the gun they come with has iron sights and you plan on using them. When optics are involved, your cheek (=eye) is going to be too low. That laminated stock version is way better, and for the extra $100, you get a nicer feeling gun, metal trigger guard, recoil pad and (not that you'll need it) higher resale value.

Back to the 10/22~I used to own one, and like you...I got tempted by the red dot. Didn't like the gun, didn't like the red dot. (bought both new) Semis are fun, but I don't ever suggest them as a first gun. When the time comes for one (after you have lots of mileage on a bolt gun) do yourself a favor and look at Marlins. Until then, get yourself a Savage...a 1/2-decent scope, lots of different ammo to try, and enjoy watching the bullets go exactly where you point the gun.
 
Well, if you get yourself a new girlfriend so to speak, she is going to be stiff n'tight.
No s'periance but at least she will have no bad habits.
If you can find a decent tramp, she will work wonders for you.
She will know the ropes and allow you to enter your round (s) easily and have
no problem swallowing all you can throw at her.
Some can be a tad loose and shakey and maybe a tattoo or two, but the old
gals with all the s'periance can make one proud....... :D

I am one of those "Semi-Autos" as a first gun guy and I regret it. I got a Remington 597 as my first gun and the gun has worked flawlessly never once has an issue and have shot close to 1000 rounds through it but I felt I learned the fundamentals of shooting far more from a bolt action rifle, as each shot forces you to take your time.

I am certaintly glad I asked a couple questions. just need to do some more research and get my poop in a group. I know a couple things though; 100% want a blot action, would like too shoot at 100-150 yards and will need a scope accordingly. I think with some more creeping in this section and a few more questions I should be set within a week or so!

Just to add to the complexity, I have a .17hmr Marlin (bolt obviously). It has a sporter barrel, and yet is more accurate out to 100 yds or more than my Remington 700. Seriously, it is amazingly accurate. The ammo is pricier, but it's not like you're engaging in rapid fire...

And as far as I'm concerned, you will never go wrong with a Ruger 10/22.
 
I talk to a lot of older gentlemen almost everyday, and we often talk guns. Without exception every on of them has kept their most accurate 22 with iron sights and if they didn't they wish they had it. there are two which always are talked about, Remmingtons and Brno's. Go buy the first cz 452 (new brno) that fits you and that you like and keep it for life. It will not be the only gun you buy, it will be the one you keep the longest and will miss the most if you sell it.
