*Thanks for the reply's to date - appreciated*

In this age of shorages I've a question for you experienced 12 ga reloaders... Now this is outside the published acceptable data I realize , I do have have Shotshell data here as well , so I don't need to buy a manual.

I have Alliant Power Pistol , the burn rate falls between Alliant Unique and Hodgdon Universal... Would you fellas think Power Pistol could be used in 12 ga reloads if the shortage of Powder availabilty continues?

No need to flame or remark I'm courting disaster - just wondering what constitutes powder acceptability for shotshell reloading and what does not.

Thanks ,

Bob

Not without sending your loads to a reliable pressure testing laboratory, or you setting up your own pressure testing.
Shotshells don't give you visible pressure signs that you can read.

yes you can
I am shooting many "off the book" shotgun loads and I still have all my body parts in the same bag :)

Lol..This makes me think about days gone by when someone somewhere had to fill up that first reloaded shell , pull the trigger and see what happens... I'm pretty sure some enterprising fella's have ventured this way just in case thay had to do it in earnest some day.

Thanks for the reply

Burn rate is what counts here. You can use pistol powders in shotshells and vice versa. Just proceed cautiously. - dan

Theoretically this powder could be used to produce an acceptable 12 gauge load. In practice shotgun loads are very component specific, nowhere will you find reputable published information suggesting untested loads. You can not substitute powders, wads, shot weight, even primers or hulls without risking an unknown pressure change that could push your load into an unsafe territory. Shotgun ammo operates in a very narrow low pressure window and small seemingly unimportant changes to a recipe can have a large effect on pressures. Consider….. shotgun working pressures range around 8,000 to 14,000 psi, an untested jump of 2,000 to 3,000 psi can push past the safe working limit of your gun, possibly leading to damage or disaster. Many Shotgun actions are weak compared to rifle actions and shotgun barrels are made thin compared to rifles so as to keep the weight down. They can do this because of the low pressures of the ammo. There are many safe tested shotgun loads that use nominal pistol powders, if you want to use one powder for both use one of these powders. Stay safe.
