At least you cleaned it.

I had a guy put a new Tradex 6.5 x55 Swede barrel on an old Spanish Model '95 action for me, he donated a stock too and I thought I had myself a cheap custom rifle and shot it at the range without cleaning the grease out of the barrel. I though he had done so. I looked down it first and could see light at the other end so I thought I was good to go.

Had to use a 2x4 to bang the bolt open and I'm scared to shoot it now.

sounds like other issues to me.............

you certainly did NO harm. If that relatively mild treatment did any harm to the bore ....the barrel was junk anyway and the sooner you find out the better! You ought to see how military weapons are proofed then test fired at the manufacturer AND then abused by the troops when used!! you will have NO problem!!!now run a couple wet patches and a couple of dry ones to make sure none of the bronze bristles broke off in the barrel (unlikely though!)

I have a good 1 piece rod and brass brush and jag, everything works great. Thanks a lot guys, my heart just sank when I read the card from the manufacturer. Hope your fall hunting season goes well. I'm gonna try and bag a moose with this Howa! Cheers

After your hunt with that rifle could you give us an update on your overall opinion of the rifle, how well it shoots and functions, if you are satisfied with it , etc.
Also what chambering is it ? Note : If successful pictures of the hunt & Moose are a must !

I would never be worried about running a wet brush through a bore. Dirty or clean. I always use quality products including a bore-guide mind you. If I'm wrong in doing so..if wrecked a lotta gun's!

I wouldn't be at all worried. As to the people that are referring to the rifle as unfired, it was test fired at the factory, so it wasn't really unfired. As to packing grease, I haven't seen any used by Howa. I generally run a patch of Butch's Bore Shine down the barrel of a new rifle, followed by a patch of G-96 Gun Treatment, and then before the gun is fired, I run a dry patch down the bore. I rarely use a brush at all, and when I do, it's usually a nylon brush.

I have heard rumours of folks ruining guns by improper cleaning but as of yet I've never actually seen one. As was mentioned rifle steel is pretty tough stuff. I doubt that a couple of swipes with a brass brush could ever do anything. Enjoy your rifle.

I guess some people are embarrassed making small mistakes or not knowing something. If I got embarrassed about all the questions I asked or the mistakes I've made I'd be red faced most of the time.
