I'm going to start out at the range skeet shooting but would like to get into hunting in the spring. Any ideas? Thanks for the help!
The Express is a tried and true platform. It shares many parts with your dad's Wingmaster. From what I've seen, read and heard what problems they do have are more often with the Super-Mag so I'd suggest staying with the 3" version of the gun.

If you aren't comfortable buying used then stick with a new gun. Buy from a nearby store so if there are problems you can go back to let them help set things right.

Part of the trouble with forums like this one is that everyone has their favourite gun. Often what they like isn't what is best for another person particularly a new shooter so I'd disagree with those suggesting Ithaca 37s or Winchester Model 12s. Nothing wrong with either gun but they aren't as common or readily serivceable as an 870.

The advice to buy a KSG or a Dominion Grizzly is simply dumb. Neither are guns particularly suitable for skeet shooting and hunting.

Slug barrel= rifled for sabot slugs
Rifled slug= use in a smooth bore
A smooth bore is capable of shooting slugs within 100yds easy, but a rifled barrel and sabot slugs will reach out a bit more with greater accuracy for sure. Another thing to consider is most rifled barrels are better set up for sights and/or a low power scope. Buy a field/rifled combo IMO.

Thank you..good to know! I had no idea a slug bbl meant it was rifled. I don't know why I assumed it was smooth bore. Makes sense now.

NorthernCdnGunner where are you located? If you are anywhere near Winnipeg I would be glad to take you out to the Winnipeg Trap and Skeet and shoot a couple of rounds with you.

It's December now, so serious target shooting won't start for another 4 months or so. Hunting isn't until next fall. There is NO rush to get a gun. Take your time and be patient and you will find what you want in the price range you have. IF you really like your Dad's Wingmaster, and shoot it WELL, its a good place to start looking for another one. Have your Dad ask his buddies to see if they know of a gun that might be for sale. If there is a gun club nearby go ask some shooters and maybe put up an add on the bulletin board. Get some feelers out. Lots of older shooters are willing to help get a new guy started and may give you a deal they wouldn't give others.

If you want a cheap shotgun, in pump action, you can't go wrong with a Maverick 88 either. Essentially a dressed down Mossberg - and it will do anythign and everythign my buddy's 870 will do - excpet his has wood that nees to be cared for, and mine is synthetic and doesnt' care what you do to it. 20+ years of hard hunting and never had a single issue with it. Far more than most would expect from a ~$200 shotgun.

Why not consider a Benelli Nova or Super Nova? That's what I got for my first gun. Yes it's a bit more expensive but at least not everyone has one.

I am now looking for my first semi shotgun, mainly for the fiancee and was looking at a new Remington 11-87 but I've read lots of complaints. So now I am considering a Weatherby SA-08 as it's affordable and it's not a big investment if she doesn't continue the sport.

i got a browning bps stalker, bottom ejection, very smooth slide, optional 3.5", never jams, and its not too badly priced either. i think its a very good quality shotgun compared to some others ive held, such as compared to my $400 8.5" grizzly, makes it look like its only worth $200.
