Can't speak to this one, but when I was a young man a Python was $125. Government Model was ten bucks cheaper. Long ago and far away, lol. - dan

I would think so yeah.
I'd love to find a higher end Kimber (used) and trade... but money does speak volumes.

Lanes Sporting Goods! That was a great little store. I'd hang around that place, when I was a kid, until someone shooed me out the door. Finally got old enough to buy guns on my own. Bought a Remington Mohawk 10C, in 1972, that's still in my case. Other than a few old photos, That's the only thing I've held onto this long. Whenever I'm back east for a visit, I always walk by that corner, just to see what business is in that spot now.
I don't even remember them having a handgun display. Were they kept out of sight, per chance?
Back to topic, that's a nice project. I'd consider machining a new custom hammer, then making that piece a daily driver. You'll never reproduce the factory finish, so why waste $$ trying? With medium power loads, that would be a real dream to shoot. Let'er rip.

Just clean it up and voila, you have a DAO Python! Some police departments converted their revolvers to fire DAO. I know Ruger sold spurless hammers for their revolvers for police agencies.
I had a similar experience when I bought a 6" Python from a police officer I worked with and he let me have it for a very good price "back in the day". Yours is in better condition than mine was.
However, I prefer S&W's so after a while I sold it for twice what it cost me. Maybe I should have tried a 4" or 2.5" barreled one as I always found the 6" a little muzzle heavy.
