Bought a used auto 5 off here this week for a fantastic price of 200$
Or so i thought. My heart sank when i pulled out the barrel and realized it was bulged really bad. Not sure if the seller is going to give my money back but just wondered what you guys have to say about bulged barrels. Unfortunately it is too far back to cut and save as a slug barrel so basically scrap as far as I am concerned but man I wanted this gun so bad. It was to be a replacement for my first shotgun and is the same configuration 2-3/4" auto 5 26" full choked vent ribbed barrel. GRRR best hope is I get my money back cause i know i wont find another barrel cheap. Can a bulged VR barrel be saved ?

Dude, YOLO, shoot it

I am not responsible for any injuries or death that may result from following my advice

How bad is the bulge? If it looks like a snake that swallowed a frog, probably better not to shoot it. If it is slight, and if it were mine, I'd shoot it.

Yeah I shoulda known was too good to be true lol.
Listed as rough and you can see the end of the barrel is pretty badly rusted in the ad but the seller mentioned it functioned good so thought it was just all bad cosmetics.
You can still see pics of her listed in the shotgun exchange "Ithaca 37's, Auto 5, Wingmaster" I believe was the title its on page 3 now. Coincidentally no bulges in the pics?
Seller says he will return the funds after the gun gets back LOL I think we got it straightened out now waiting for emt but jeepers why hide such a major flaw eh ? Its actually bulged in two spots on closer inspection. The really bad one is almosted ringed at about 15". Going to snap a couple p[ics before I pack it back up but gonna find a better specimen for sure.

I've owned 2 "ringed barrel" guns. Neither of which was a shotgun, (pistol, and rimfire rifle) Other than piss poor accuracy, they were ok to shoot. A ring is just a "relieved" area of barrel the projectile/shot is no longer gonna be in contact with. If you don't go shooting heavy home loads, I can't see why it wouldn't be safe to shoot. (Of course, a big maybe........a huge "ring" or a smallish ring. A huge ring would mean seriously stretched metal, but a small one , with shotgun shells seeing around 15 to 20K of pressure, would seem to be decently safe to shoot. Just get your least favorite friend to shoot it first.

I guess it is time to attempt to defend myself. Here are some facts regarding the transaction.

I was not given the opportunity to respond or correct the situation before this thread was started.
I have a trader rating of 140, have never had negative feedback, and have been a member of this site for 9 years.
I was back to the seller within 45 minutes telling him to return the gun and I'd send him a full refund.
Marlin wanted a full refund before he shipped the gun back which I immediately agreed to.
There was never any intent to deceive Marlin. I took the gun in a trade and wasn't aware of the bulged barrel. I shot the gun and photographed the gun and didn't notice the bulged barrel.
I sent Marlin a full refund including his shipping cost this morning prior to finding this thread and making this post.
I'm really not a crook but feel l'm being treated like one.

Looks like the buyer and seller have worked things out between themselves. We don't need to add any more commentary on the transaction itself.

Bulged barrel, though, I wouldn't shoot. It has been stressed and weakened. And especially if it is closer to the chamber and subject to more pressure, I'd be more worried about it than if it were closer to the muzzle. Unfortunately, A5 barrels are expensive.

Sounds like you have been more than fair. Maybe the OP could give you a little more credit, JMO.

He might not have mentioned any names but when you put this in your post it is not hard to figure out whoever the seller is. Until time was given to let the seller respond, the only thing that should have been mentioned was that the op was wondering if a bulged barrel was safe regarding a gun that he has.
