Hey Guys,

Quick questions

1) Do I need to plug my mossberg 590 (8+1) for rabbit and upland bird hunting in Nova Scotia?

2) Can I use Federal "Field and Range" Shotshells for this type of hunting?

I know you must use steel shot on migratory birds, does the rule still apply for Grouse / Partridge / Rabbit?

I know my shotgun isn't ideal (Cylinder Bore no choke) but it's all I have at the momment.

Thanks!

Look in your hunting regs. They talk about a plug when hunting migratory birds, but there's no mention of it for other game. Ditto for the shot.
"...Cylinder Bore no choke..." It's not as bad as you'd think for close range, quick, shots at Bugs or upland birds. Both tend to sit still until you're about to step on 'em then they go rocketing off from under your foot. An open choke works fairly well for this kind of shooting. Once you get used to shooting at rockets.

Hey Bud,

No plug required in your shotgun for non-migratory waterfowl. Your good with rabbits and grouse with as many as she'll hold. Field loads are also fine. Only steel required once again for migratory waterfowl.

Load up and giv'er!

Shotguns in Ontario must be plugged to 3 shells for all hunting. You can remove it for targets and self defence. non toxic shot is only required for waterfowl.

No plug required for upland hunting in Nova Scotia.Use of non toxic shot only for waterfowl or on certain Federal lands. The only migratory bird which can be hunted in Nova Scotia with lead shot is woodcock.

Wish we had that law in Ontario, could always use an extra shot shell when shooting at wild flushing grouse or pheasant, and three shots later, the gun's empty, and Suddenly a rabbit flushes from under you're feet....
And all you've got is an empty gun?...

Update, went hunting yesterday.

Saw ONE Grouse on the wing, he flew over me as I was taking the trigger lock off my shotgun. He got away.

Nothing else, no tracks no bunny poop.

Trying again tomorrow.

I thought I read somewhere, some obscure referance to the use of non-toxic shot on even upland game, at 200 meters or less from a named body of water in NS??

Anyone else confirm or refute this strange one???

PS: Wow, no plug anymore here for upland.......
