I recently picked up a bedraggled looking pre-64 Winchester Model 70 that had a scope mounted on the left receiver rail. I didn't seem to matter that the front receiver ring was drilled and tapped at the factory, however this artisan installed this mount with three screws. Actually, the right most hole was for a 1/4 x 20 bolt. Not the finer thread 1/4 x 28, he chose the tougher 20 inch thread.

I installed shortened screws into the holes and cemented them in place with epoxy. I cut off the heads and filed them down. When they were close to the receiver, I peened the edges while I was dressing them down flush with the metal. After polishing the holes with emery paper. I took it to a machine shop several towns away. The owner makes parts for the mining industry and uses bluing salts to finish them. He tumbles the parts in a bath with ceramic chips and then blues them. Here's how it turned out.

That's a fair job fixing it up - have to look close to see the repair.

That's about the path I would have took - it works.

I think that's a highly nice workmanlike repair. We all need to work within our limits for tools and techniques. But within your choices I'd say you did a neatly skilled job. The fixed areas look just fine.

AND LOOK! You've got a new unheard of brand ! ! ! ! ! :d
