.308 or a .223, depending on what range you plan to shoot at. there is no reason to go to something less common if it is your only firearm. all the other calibres you list are harder to get good brass for, dont have as good a selection of bullets, and barrel life is likely to be shorter. i would stay with a .308, .284, .243, or .223 calibre just for the options as far as bullets go. Of the above listed calibres the only one that appeals to me is the 6.5x55

do you wear weird colored clothes and spike your hair, as well as adorn yourself with all kinds of weird piercings just to be different? There is a reason those common calibres are so prolific. 6.5x55 looks pretty apealling, anyways. the rest would really not make much sense for someone who just likes to shoot.

whats with the ball busting? Guess I should have said I was looking for a new deer rifle and left out target rifle.

If this is truly the case then why do they make rifles chamber in anything different then a 30-30 or 30-06? There are many different cartridges they all kill the same, why do people choose a 257 Roberts or ackley improved? Or target shooters that choose 338LM or 50BMG. you have a fudds attitude, not a shooters attitude.

I'm i big fan of the 6.5mm cartridges, I'd suggest the 260 or 6.5x55. Both are great reloaders cartridges, accurate, and due to the high BC of 6.5 bullets, they shoot fairly flat despite having relativley low muzzle velocities. They also are pretty easy on the shoulder.

Muledeercrazy. Chill. He wants something different. So do many others, thats why we have so many different cartridges, not just .22lr, 30-06, 12ga, and 375 h&h for all your possible needs.

You mentioned .35-20. Does this mean you'd prefer a "classic" cartridge over the new super speed stuff or that you're just looking to be different? Would you like the option of reloading and shooting with the much cheaper cast lead bullets and deal with a little more drop at longer ranges or do you want to stick with jacketed and make 'em sizzle down the range at multi Mach speeds?

What sort of target work? Serious benchrest stuff or more for fun and giggles? With a scope or would you enjoy the challenge of a first rate small aperature target peep sight setup for medium to long range duties?

What type of rifle? A single shot falling or rolling block old time special, a lever gun, modern break action such as a TC Encore or a true blue bolt gun?

CrazyDeer gave you a great caliber choice in terms of recoil, accuracy, and cost. As a bonus you can hunt anything with it including long range rabbits.
