Hey fellow CGNers,

Looking to get some feed back on Chrome lined barrels vs non chrome lined.

I want to buy a VZ58 for my son, he is really interested in the gun (and i have seen a few in the EE that he likes), still trying to figure out weather to get 223 or the 7.62(but that's him to decide for the kick back). Is there a significant difference, from shooting cheap ammo (corrosive) vs not so cheap(non corrosive) . If i get him the gun, then i want my wallet to be ok with 100rds at the range at a time. So, based on that, does chrome in a VZ58 make any difference, i clean religiously, and if used on a camping trip or just some bush days, i have the means to pull through and lube when needed.

what are your thoughts.

With your cleaning habits it won't matter much, both need to be cleaned appropriately after shooting corrosive ammo.

Two guns on the table, similar features and price, I'd probably take the chrome.

I'd also get the original chambering and stock up on the inexpensive surplus that is currently available. 7.62 X 39 is a nice shooting round out of the VZ58 and the price is right.

Feels about the same as the 30-30.

Thanks for the reply, i have a 30-06 and he gets ancy around the kick of it. thats why im thinking 223. But i myself like the x39 ammo, mind you at my local gun shop, the 223 ammo is cheaper that the x39. Also, local shop has a brand new 223 VZ58, but the mags are see through plastic, and im worried about them breaking. Any ideas? should i be worried?

I don't know too much about the .223 versions.
You can order crates of 7.62X39 (1200 rounds) with free shipping for around $250.00

Recoil will not be an issue.

get him into light shotguns for recoil- say 20 gauge - or the06 is just fine- it's all about TECHNIQUE, not how big the gun is-223 will be the lightest recoiling gun, even with 70+ grain slugs , they're a dream to shoot- then when he's ready go to the 30 cals- personally,i find the 7.62x39 a pita as the ergonomics of the gun doesn't fit me properly- my 308s fit better and do a better job at longer ranges- remember it's the WEIGHT of the slug more so than the velocity that generates the recoil- ie my 180s generate more recoil than 165s- I can find NO excuse for the 7.62x39 and won't have one due to the oddball bore size- and it's a POOR 30/30- imo, a useless pos

gets ancy over 17 ft pounds of recoil?- GROW SOME

Many people, (not just kids) find the 30-06 to be a bit unpleasant for a day at the range. Expensive as well for range fun.

Sure proper technique, a well fitting gun, a muzzle break or semi auto action can all reduce the unpleasantness but if his kid is interested in a great gun like the VZ58, why make him shoot 30-06?

b/c is he ever expands his horizons he's going to come up wanting- ie hunting deer and larger- the '39 is good for plinking only imo- and our mulies require at least a 30/30- the real reason his kid is interested in the vz et al is that it LOOKS like the ak- and with kids , it's all about looks- the same way as the squires/bingham and ap74 LOOK like an m16- moreover it's deucedly hard to go prone with anything with a large mag hanging down, and with our 5 round cap, what's the point?

Fit is important. Which 7.62X39 doesn't fit you? SKS? VZ? Zastava?CZ?Ruger? Doesn't really matter at the end of the day I guess if it doesn't fit you it doesn't fit. Sounds like it's more then just fit that you don't like as that can be overcome.

While cost of shooting cheap surplus for a range plinking fun gun is not an excuse, it's definitely a reason.

If he get's into it, he will likely own more then one gun. If not then that's that.
Nothing wrong with going after the hot chicks till you find a real woman...... and if she's hot, even better!

I just assume he wants to have some fun at the range at this point.

I agree that the long mags are useless for us but the short mags work just fine.

You cannot go wrong with either caliber. The 5.56 does have noticeably less recoil than the 7.62 version. You will probably get more feedback in the red rifles section as the VZ58 falls into that category on here for the most part.

good point, yes my son likes cause of the look cool factor, i like cause of the caliber and its a non restricted semi. would be a good bush gun for dear, and a fun gun for the boy. Win win. Now for the chrome thing, there are a few on the ee going for same value, most if not all non chromed, would this be an issue for longevity of the barrel. The ones for sale vary form 100rds to 1500rds shot, all stating non corrosive for the most part, but cleaned well. Anything i should look for?

well the us went to chromed barrels to combat the rust factor- I tend to follow what the big boys do- ie chrome barrel with low round count- even if there has been corrosive shot through it, the chrome is going to be more resistant- and you can't go wrong with a LOWER round count..

very true, this will be for him to enjoy at the range. Long mags are useless and add wieght for not reason as the 5 rd cap keeps it that way. there are short mags fro both 223 and 39, but i think form looking at comparison charts, the 39 is significantly less than my 12 gauge, which he shoots and can be accurate with even being a shotgun.

Low round count is an obvious, but chrome is a hard to find thing in the non restricted, and when there there, there gone. i spend too much time outside and on the water to be checking for good deals, so i hope i can get the deal im looking for so he can plink away.

at the end of the day, 223 less recoil, but plastic mags without an ar mag adapter, 39 is more versitile for bush, has long mags and kicks more, but not as much as the 12ga. Ill keep looking, i guess with the shooting he will do at the range, and if i use as a bush gun, chrome aint an issue as i clean pretty consistanlty, but chrome is better in the long run.

thanks for the help, keep all the info coming, more questions to follow
