Poaching Rant

So I'm talking to a good friend and she tells me how she's caught 4 different vehicles jacklighting deer in the past week in the Campbellford and Hastings area. One group even shot a doe in a farmers field late at night. Sadly the farmer didn't call police. Then tonight I catch a suspicious vehicle driving slowly near my place, so I drive past and loop around the next road. Sure enough, they swing around and pass me again, driving backroads, more than likely looking for an unsuspecting deer. I don't care who these people are, I have absolutely no respect for anyone poaching. I hope to god that people start reporting this BS and the courts take it seriously. Fine the living $hit out of them and take their guns and trucks as the FWCA allows. If you're reading this and you're one of these people, you should be ashamed of yourself, you have no right to call yourself a hunter or sportsman in any capacity.

I poach all the time... Although I do enjoy over-easy on occasion.

Joking aside, I agree and think its disgraceful how stupid some people can be

You could always loses as a fellow poacher and "accidentally" shoot their truck, say you thought it was a Sasquatch or a unicorn.

I would think a chipper hammer to the rad would be a good place to start.
Maybe swing by the oil filter.

Big problem where I hunt too. Problem is most landowners in a small town won't call it in, fear of local backlash IMO. Going back quite a number of years the road hunting was generally accepted by the locals, but it was mainly locals doing it and they at least had a good idea of where all the farmyards and what not were. (Not condoning it here) Now they just bang away at anything that moves in any direction, some don't even give a #### if they're in plain sight of a home. And worst of all they're too ####ing lazy to get out of the truck and track anything. If it doesn't drop on the spot they just drive away looking for another one. Last year we found a gorgeous old 4x5 buck lying dead on the property, gut shot and found by the coyotes. Really ####'s me off.

When I lived at Wainwright Ab. I used to get up before dawn to go hunting and if there was new snow the night before almost all the good hunting spots had truck tracks already going around the edge of the feilds and gone again. This was at least two hours or more before dawn.

I suggest when you approach a vehicle filled with complete strangers, whom you strongly suspect to be carrying high powered rifles at night, that this just might be an unwise decision for your continuing health. Are they "just poachers" or otherwise?

I always liked the candle method.
Replace the oil drain plug with a candle stuffed in the hole. As the engine and oil heats up , the candle drips away. Oops. ( not that I would ever do anything like that because I'm an angel )

Not sure how you can do that with the crank case full of oil though.............sounds like BS to me.............but anyway I don't like poachers either

when we lived just out side owen sound they would use our driveway for night shots... we welded up a spike belt or 10 and they went out every night one night the sons oh #####es came up to the house pretty upset and asking for a lil help well I tell you by the time the tractor got lit up and I was ready to helpem out up came the police...see ya boys. also please note I was not charged but well advised (with a smile and a hand shake) that the spike belts that were in place for noble reasons were considered traps thus against the law.... but i'd do it again these people make me sick!!!!

Hence the reason they continue, due to fear. You really think these ######s would shoot you over a poached deer? I'm not saying go knock on their windows, but I'd have no issues pulling up behind and getting a plate number. Done it before, and I'll do it again.

If your going to vandalize someones private property you are no better than they are.
From what I read the incident was someone driving around the country at night.
Is it illegal to travel on public roads after dark?
If you suspect them of doing something illegal call the Cops, call the Game Wardens and record as much info as needed .
How many here have actually gone the full distance and gone to court after the Officials have done their part after responding to a legitimate complaint ?

We've tried the game warden route with the road/night hunters and it's never amounted to squat. Even signed the papers allowing them to set up a fluffy on our place, showed them a spot with heavy traffic and gut piles where none should be. There was even a nice place to hide the trucks out of sight. Nuttin. The old lady's cousin just graduated from the course up at the Pas and is looking for work, he tells me the game branch in this province is undergoing cutbacks and he won't be going that route now. Some areas are so understaffed they don't even have enough manpower to issue a ticket. And Our local branch office is only open two days a week...

All I'm saying is that in a vehicle full of poachers, chances are at least one of them has a prior record of who knows what.

The best way to do it would be to just loosen the drain plug and leave it spun half way out, then it would just fall out eventually and then it didnt look like vandalism........ That would be a real #### move though and far too much effort just for some guy driving around in the dark.

Driving at night in a rural area is still legal, and can even be considered lazy scouting, so I wouldn't concern myself with that one provided they're on public roads. If private and I missed that, different story.

As for straight poaching, ran into a group of those myself around a week ago poaching red listed Wood Bison, posted the write up here, they'd shot and wounded a bull and left him to walk off and suffer. Makes one indescribably angry. CO's caught up with them it seems however.
