Poaching Rant

Call the Opp or CO right away. If they're in possession of spotlight and theres a gun in the vehicle they can and most likely will be charged on the spot.

I know of a story where an elk was illegally shot.
A chap came by and acted all excited to see his first elk.
He was allowed to take photos of the downed elk and promised
to send pictures their way.
Of course this is in the time before digital cameras and emails and such.
The chap was such a good photographer, he even managed to get the
truck's licence plate number and all their faces in.
There would be no arguing this illegal elk kill.
All the evidence the crown needed to charge these fine folk.

pretty tough to do anything mischievous when the poachers are probably no farther away than 50 yards or so, but the idea certainly is appealing.

best one that I know of is to pull a spark plug or two, and toss a few ball bearings into the cylinder. Supposedly makes one hell of a racket.

Well, most times the poachers are very local people. You report them , they will know who did just due to who lives where and where they were hunting.

I'd also like to see these "heroes" do these wonderfully covert things to these poachers vehicles. When the heck are you gonna do that? They are in their vehicle or near it 100% of the time, unless of course you follow them home and do it while they are sleeping or away.If you are willing to vandalize someones property be prepared for legal consequence or the "justice" you speak of, it may come right back at you, especially if you attempt it on a person who isn't doing illegal activity.

Are you going to give a police report at the hospital that someone kicked the crap out of you while you drained their oil or punctured the radiator?

The reality is that kind of talk is just internet justice and won't go anywhere. I don't mind making a call about poachers though, and certainly don't give a damn if they know. That's the problem with people these days, they'd rather turn a blind eye than stand for something.

LOTS of poaching out my way its getting stupid!

My friend and I have a section of land that has a highway on one side. So far this year 3 bucks shot off the highway and heads cut off and I haven't even walked in there very far yet. Same dam thing every year, I won't even tell you about all the gun shots after dark, or the 100"s (yes hundreds!) of people that trespass with trucks.

Last year my buddy punched a guy out that shot a deer off the road in front of his place and was walking around looking for it. Even though there was 3 of them with guns and my buddy dropped one of them then phoned the fish cops and made them sit there until the CO showed up. CO made my buddy apologise for punching the one guy and charged the poachers.

You know when I see a truck slowly crawling through a side road at night I'd offer to help them look for their dog and hey gimmie your number n I'll call you if he turns up at the house.
If the fellas have some hard calibers in plain sight then sure a responsible citizen may follow his conscience on that.

Here's another one that happens all too often.

The other day when I got back to my truck it was dark. 200 yards away I see a truck parked across the gravel road lights shining on to my place. They see me and take off. I put all my gear away, talk on the phone for a half hour then head for home. A few miles down the road guess who I see? Yep same truck coming back really slow. I let them go past then watch them in the rear view mirror. Of course they pull into an approach (my buddy's driveway) and shine their lights on some hay bales. So now I got to turn around and chase the ####ers 10 miles so they get the point.

I immediately like that guy.

I routinely hunt several 1/4 sections. One of which is an agricultural lease. Myself and one other guy have permission to hunt on that 1/4. Last year, I found a guy on it who did not have permission. I told him that since it was an ag lease, he needed permission. I gave him the leasehold info. He did not follow up on it until he saw me in the field this week. I phoned the leasehold right then and got him talking to the guy. Now, 3 people have access.

That being said, I found a ground blind in the wood line that the leasehold did not know who it belonged to, neither did the other guy hunting there. There have been over a dozen deer in that field eating alfalfa pre-season many nights. The guy who just got access told me that he has seen 4-6 guys in there at any one time the first week of season. Guys just being dropped off by the fence, crossing into the field, harvesting a doe, dragging it to the fenceline without even gutting it, getting picked up and gone.

Pi$$es me off! I work hard for hunting areas. I shoot thousands of gophers to pay for permission. I scout for days other areas to hunt so that I can be successful. I walk hundreds of km from Sep to the end of Nov learning the areas I want to hunt. Yes, there are times now that I drive the PUBLIC WOODS ROADS but only shoot on crown land, I have an MD landowners map in the truck to ensure where I am shooting/hunting. I have even tracked down landowners via Internet searches, called them, and have about a 50% success rate obtaining permission on succulent tracts of land with lakes adjacent to large copses of trees and brush...deer heaven!! But with permission. I am teaching my step-son to hunt this year. He is brand new from Sarnia and has NEVER even thought about hunting. Several times we have seen plenty of deer along the hwy. He wants me to stop and shoot them. Each time, I tell him why that is not legal or otherwise correct. Many are on city property or within the 200yd boundary of a dwelling (I know, that only counts if you SHOOT within 200yds, but I'd have a problem with someone dropping an animal next to my house from 300yds away...)

I have a friend who routinely has deer shot in his field, right against the house often enough, from the road, at night. Calls to the police and COs are useless. They take too long to get out there and the guy is 85, not really going out to brace them and hold them there until the police arrive an hour later.

Not a poaching story, but one of those feel good revenge stories:
More than 20 years ago when I had a summer job helping neighbours clean their cattle corrals one of the loader operators told us about how he was certain he was missing gas from his 500 gallon yard tank. He wasn't 100% sure because there wasn't a meter on the tank, just call the Co-op to fill it up when it runs out.
Well, one Saturday night he was in the living room watching the late late late show. His wife had gone to bed, and all the lights were out. He noticed a set of headlights driving slowly down the road past his place, stop for a short bit, and then drive on. He got curious and got out of his easy chair to see why the vehicle had slowed down: maybe his cows were out of their pens. Huh! Somebody was at his yard tank filling a pair of jerry cans. So he went into the bedroom, pulled the 30-06 out of the closet and loaded a couple of rounds.
By the time he got to the front door the thief was walking back to the road with two full jerry cans of his gas. So he lined up the scope, and let one bullet fly about 2 feet over the head of the guy in his yard. Appearrantly when you steal gas and have a bullet pass really close to your head, you drop the jerry cans and don't go back for seconds.
The funny part of the story was that the guy who was losing gas, didn't lose any more gas, and he still had one of the jerry cans.

In Ontario the co's are either overworked this time of year or don't have the money to respond. One night 2 years ago I saw a light and some shooting at night and then the vehicle left. I called the poaching hotline and left a message. The next day I found a blood trail in the snow in my field and followed it. It must have been a minor wound because it didn't last long and I never did find the deer as the tracks got mixed up with a bunch of others. 3 days later a co showed up at my door in response to my message.

Two years ago I was bowhunting and discovered a fresh doe kill that was shot in the white neck patch with a rifle. I heard the schmucks returning so I tucked into a downed tree and had the pleasure of watching 4 yahoo's dragging another deer back to the first one and each had their own rifle. After smoking two joints they started heading towards their truck.

I went back to my truck and drove around the bush to see what they were driving.

They were using rifles in a bow/shotgun only area...
They likely had no tags for the deer...
They were carrying firearms and driving while high...
They were poaching on land that they didn't have permission to be on...

I called the OPP and MNR and neither would even bother with it as the plate # came back as being registered on the reserve. Slightly annoying, ya?

Heard a couple of low power paffs this Saturday around 1:30 pm, the shots were real close. I got out and see an older silverado with a couple fellas in the cab and one in the bed do the slow turn around in my approach. I figure they saw me cause they booted the hell out of there. No more than 50 yards from my barn and about 100 yards from the house was a downed spiker.

If you butt munching poachers hunting south of Vita are reading this, my kids were playing outside. My neighbour saw you and I have a fair idea where you folks are from. You can think hard about what I will do next.

I always liked the candle method.
Replace the oil drain plug with a candle stuffed in the hole. As the engine and oil heats up , the candle drips away. Oops. ( not that I would ever do anything like that because I'm an angel )

If you can access it, crazy glue on the gas cap works wonders too. It's far less destructive, but gets the point across.

I went out for my first time with a mentor and we stopped by a farmer's field to look at a herd of mulies and white tail in a unit that specified only bucks. We did not see any that we could have shot and we didn't have the farmer's permission besides so it was just for interest's sake. 50m down the road we saw some guy stop his truck, get out and take a shot. At what?? We didn't see a single buck out of all of the scattering deer. The guy just took off. He took a shot and missed? Shot just for the hell of it? Here I am with the regs all highlighted and sweating about being legal and my mentor can't explain what this guy just did.

Disgusting. Sorry you had to see that.
