Poaching Rant

Big problem where I hunt too. Problem is most landowners in a small town won't call it in, fear of local backlash IMO. Going back quite a number of years the road hunting was generally accepted by the locals, but it was mainly locals doing it and they at least had a good idea of where all the farmyards and what not were. (Not condoning it here) Now they just bang away at anything that moves in any direction, some don't even give a #### if they're in plain sight of a home. And worst of all they're too ####ing lazy to get out of the truck and track anything. If it doesn't drop on the spot they just drive away looking for another one. Last year we found a gorgeous old 4x5 buck lying dead on the property, gut shot and found by the coyotes. Really ####'s me off.

Most of them don't know if it's Illegal or not and the other problem is who do you call and how the heck are they going to get there to catch them it takes forever to get to some of the areas. I know people complain all the time about roadway hunters it's illegal some even use tags just drive up and down till they see something then shoot it. The problem is it ends up being on someones land or towards their house and I know 1 person had bullets go past more the once from people shooting road signs and at deer. The deer come onto his yard they're so tame you could pet them they don't care if your 5 feet away he had 8 bucks on his yard I was like hmm the deer just keep coming you make lots of noise they don't care 1 bit. (they know he doesn't shoot at them)

I personally disagree with poaching, but I think I can relate to motives. Has anyone actually had a stranger grant them permission to hunt on their property? I know I have spent hours driving around to prospective spots and asking land owners, and I have NOT ONCE been given permission.

Regardless, it's still wrong. I'm looking at spending a small fortune to secure a hunting location for myself because I know how hard it is to find good land to hunt.

Never been any kind of a fan of this pewching.
Toss them long and toss them hard.
I would think a chipper hammer to the rad would be a good place to start.
Maybe swing by the oil filter.
Just a wee little hole so it doesn't bleed out too qwik.

It would also be a shame for a sandwich bag to somehow end up in the fuel tank. Blocking and unblocking the fuel pump over and over while the owner tries to figure out the problem costing thousands in diagnosis and parts...a shame.

Last season, I had a rancher stop me on the road and ask me what I was hunting. Later in the day, I saw him again (went back to my jeep to eat lunch) and he made a map in the dirt showing me 6 mores places that I could hunt in the area. I was hunting crown land at the time, and he got me permission on the 6 ranches plus his ranch too. Beauty, eh. I was hunting bears and elk at the time. Same area, I cold called a farm, and the older lady gave me permission to hunt their 1/2 section of oats. I was a bit spooked by that place, as it reminded me of the Texas chain saw movies.

This season, I was invited to stay and hunt at a farm of folks that I never met until I pulled into their farm yard. Great people. I was treated like a long lost friend. It was a great several days.

Saskatchewan is awesome.

Since this is a rant here is a couple of things that I have experienced. A deer shot on my land at night dragged under my fence then tied to the back of a Honda CRV then dragged about 6 miles down a gravel road to a reserve. Called CO's no charges laid. Caught guy on my property told him to leave so he went back walking from his house to the same spot shot a deer there at night gutted it dragged it back down the road (blood trail in snow) to his house. Called again nothing done. Went back another time to see same guys chasing deer with a snowmobile in my field called RCMP once again nothing done. Top this one off they wanted me to chase them to a dead end road to give me a lickin. Didn't work. I realized something was wrong and didn't go. Comfirmed by one of their relatives that called me when drunk to tell me what was planned. Caught another relative of theirs on my land hunting (sitting in his cavalier smoking cigarettes with his kid) called RCMP they went right up to him charged him on scene. Crown dropped charges. Caught 2 guys dragging a deer out of my property behind a lawntractor down the road. CO's attended no charges. 2 evenings ago walked back to my truck just got back to it heard a vehicle coming down road stop then spotlight the field I just walked out of. I chased them got their plate number and know who they are because I also recognize the truck. Went this morning to same area ATV tracks nightlighting in all my fields and all my neighbours. Guess what I'm not calling anyone because it is no use. They know that I know who they all are they have nothing and never will (losers). There is only one good side to it all they are all FAS babies and have a track record of suicide, drug over dose, and diabeties so they don't live long. Top it off the guy that I caught with his kid on my land his wife left him for another guy. This isn't a lifetime of instances this is about 3 years of things. I am just hopeful that they mistake each other for deer.

Poachers need to be harassed and confronted, don't fear them. A few years back I went scouting for turkey at sun up a week before the season opened and heard a shot ring out about 150 yards away. I ran back to my truck drove to where the shooter would have been parked and started looking for them. I see a guy walking across a field about 600 yards away and as I look I see the morning sun flash off the barrel. I waited by his truck until he came out, but he had dumped the gun as he went through a small forest. I went and confronted him asking if he heard the shot, he said no and said he was just walking around. I told him I would be informing the MNR about it and him. He turned around to walk away from me and there was a box call hanging out of his back pocket. I made sure every farmer in the area knew he was a poacher, he was a local, so was I and in the end, he lost everyone's respect and permission and people knew not to mess with my area. It's the only way to deal with poachers, head on. Done it a few time over the years and never been shot yet.

Maybe it's time for MNRs to create some sort of block watch/ neighborhood watch styled national program. Call it poach watch. Put up signs advising poachers that they are in a poach watch area, and may be under surveillance.

Not an issue where I'm at. Plenty of farmers happy to let you have at er. Crown land all over the place too. Laziness is more the issue.

This would make me go crazy. #### like this makes me realy appreciate my neighbours.

Most people who live rurally know at least a couple of poachers. But without indisputable evidence (which is nearly impossible to acquire) there isnt really anything that anyone can do. Charges will never stick.

We've tried the game warden route with the road/night hunters and it's never amounted to squat. Even signed the papers allowing them to set up a fluffy on our place, showed them a spot with heavy traffic and gut piles where none should be. There was even a nice place to hide the trucks out of sight. Nuttin. The old lady's cousin just graduated from the course up at the Pas and is looking for work, he tells me the game branch in this province is undergoing cutbacks and he won't be going that route now. Some areas are so understaffed they don't even have enough manpower to issue a ticket. And Our local branch office is only open two days a week...

In ontario one warden covers from alliston to parry sound thats a good 2 hour drive by highway between the 2

It sticks if they get caught on film gunning down the warden's favorite styrofoam deer. Trouble is Natural Resources doesn't seem to want to put money and effort into that anymore. I haven't heard of anyone getting caught for a few years now.

If yours is like most provinces and territories, most of the problem is higher up in the funding chain. Wildlife and conservation efforts (including enforcement) are pretty low on the priority list.

A good shot of silicone is nice in the fuel tank as well.
