Podolsk SVT-40 at leverarms

It comes in waves
Up before 2008 there was no russian sks in Canada
Svts were 500 plus tax too
So wait for next wave
I believe this, however, one of these times WILL be the end of course, so if you must have one, by all means do it, but if it is just a cool factor and you would just like to have one,, then take a chance and wait! I am not sure if the price will be much lower than these but then again a year ago they were on sale for $200 at a couple sponsors! Yes they were rough by most accounts but an SVT all the same!

Mine just arrived. Pics to follow, but here is the overal picture - 1941 Podolsk, SVT stock, 1 repair to LH side rear receiver , no cracks or gouges. Light sanding to stock, refurb 'square' but otherwise looks pretty good with a decent redish/honey finish and plenty of proof marks. 1 matching serial number on the stock, no signs of a previous serial # being there. Matching colour/figure hand guard. Receiver milled for rails, strong Podolsk stamp, copper coloured bolt. 1 piece sling swivel, 6 port muzzle. Metal parts look good, no rust or obvious black paint, blueing looks really decent even on the butt plate. Can't see any Izzy or Tula stamps on any of the smaller parts. Mag is force matched and crudely electro-penciled. Action feels smooth, have not looked at the bore yet. The whole damn firearm is covered in cosmo, but that's part of the fun.

Very satisfied, on the whole initial visual comparison to my other refurbed SVT 40s, I'd rank it about an 8 1/2 out of 10. I'm a happy customer.

Service from Lever Arms on this transaction 10 out of 10.

I'll take some pics and post them later.

Even with the repair do you feel it was a wise purchase? I haven't received mine yet and I have some buyers remorse... I had a 91/30, M44 and SVT-40 in the past and sold them all. I wanted to get out of the caliber as I found I wasn't using them. Kind of an impulse buy, but I'll wait until I see it in my hands. SVT-40's are beautiful rifles, but I find them long and bulky when shooting. If I keep it, it's going to sit in the safe.

Wish I kept my M44 though.

Yes, I'm happy, but I am biased. I really enjoy collecting the SVT 40 rifle and adding a Podolsk to my collection was on my wish list. Now all I need is a sniper. And a '44. And a '45. And then I swear I'm done....really.

I wanted one, they are difficult to find, the opportunity came up, I could afford it, so I bought it. It is something I enjoy for it's history and it rounds out my collection so yes, as far as I am concerned I feel it was a wise purchase.

I can live with the stock repair. I've seen some really butchered refurbs and this one is not that bad at all. It is repaired with a lighter wood and it is highly noticeable, but the workmanship is good.

Take care, don't feel too bad about your purchase. If you decide to sell, I'm sure you will quickly find a buyer on the EE.

I can see from Toronto there's a Mednogorsk/Tula star on barrel band.

And I thought I had good eyesight! I'm holding it in my hands here in S'toon and I can't see a mark on it.

Seriously though, there is no mark on the barrel band and it does not look like there ever was.

After a light cleaning (read wipedown with rag in the garage) there is an Izzy triangle on the barrel band spring clip.

It could be that star disappeared after refurb cleaning and rebluing, however single piece barrel band was manufactured at Mednogorsk (ex Tula) factory starting from first half of 1942, so star is the only possible factory marking on such type.

Wouldn't it depend when they were refurbed and/or newly manufactured? I'm sure the factory could have had a bunch of old parts around too.

I doubt they manufactured anything more complex than safety switch during refurb. Most likely not. Refurbishing took place somewhere in 1960x IIRC, by that time all the tooling was packed and stored safely somewhere in Siberia "just in case". There were no importance in having as much SVTs as they can rebuild, by that time AK-47 was primary and millions of SKSs were secondary. So we are talking about third line of firearm for "just in case" scenario.
On another note - on small refurbed parts one can often see very faint markings or no markings at all - which is normal for rigorously cleaned and dip-blued small parts.

So this is the unrefurbed Podolsk that sold for $5490 US:

Can anyone breakdown the markings on their Podolsk? Which marking is used to signify it's a refurb? Or any guide to the markings that someone may see...

Mine arrived today from Lever Arms. The gun is soaked in cosmo and appears fine, however.......I was disappointed that the post office called me and said that they had a gun with a muzzle protruding from a box! I had to go pick it up at the depot because they wouldn't deliver it like that obviously. Anyways, the gun was packed in nothing more than loose newspaper in an oversized box so you can guess how easily it happened. No bubble wrap, no styrofoam, just rolled up newspaper. I really thought that coming from a dealer it would have been professionally wrapped to avoid damage. These things survived wars, and now they have to survive the post office! I hope that no one else gets their Podolsk in the mail like this. #notimpressed

I wonder if this is why mine has been at the Richmond BC depot for the past 4 days. Says its suppose to be here on Friday but it hasn't left the Richmond BC depot in 4 days.

Same here! Gun was just loose in the box with wads of newspaper....cosmo all over the place.
