Point count/scoreing?

I noticed on another thread that a guy from BC corrected the point score on what most of us refer to as a 4 point bucks. He said they are ony 2 pointers. Does this mean that the main point isn't included in the point count for official scoring?

There is No "Correct" way to add up Points...depends on where one is from.
BC'ers only Count the Tines on One side(not including the Brows) so a Typical 4x4 Muley is a 4 Pointer, a 2x2 Muley would be a 2 Point...etc. If both deer had Brow tines(G1)'s) then I guess one could say they are a 5x5 and 3x3 but here at least the Brow tines are not included when describing antlers. A Spike Buck is Not a 2 Point but rather a 1x1.
Course I do know alot of BC'ers that Count everything too
Offical Scoring is much different then the Jargon used to Describe antlers....

Many of the people that count every little point and then quote the total number of points,just want to make the rack sound larger than it is.Myself and the people that I hunt with refer to a set of antlers by the number of scoreable points(by B&C) on each side and the appoximate B&C net score.For instance a 150class 5x5 or a 130class 4x5.Now doesn't 12 point sound bigger than a 120class 4x4 with stickers even if they both describe the same set of antlers.

In B.C. we also count the brow tines on whitetail but not mulies.I don't know why.

It has always been done differently in different areas of Canada and the USA.
Most eastern (and American) guys call a 5 x 5 a 10 point, it's not important.

All that really matters is the satisfaction that you derive from the hunt.

Yup, out here we count total points, including main beam and brow tines.

In Ontaio the brows are counted and 8 pointer is what we would say. When it comes to when a point should be counted, The old guys say if the wedding ring hangs on it then it is a point, but this differs as well, not sure of the B&C scoring, never got a deer that big to have to worry about that, maybe some day.

well thanks for clearing that up guys. LMFAO!!! Honestly thanks for all the replies. This tells me that there is alot more to learn about antler scoring for me. The first buck I harvested was this year and it will always be referred to as an 8 pointer.

Careful Marlin,

The typical ones are easy to score, its the non-typical that can make for a long night with a 1/4" tape and a beer ha,ha.

I shot a 130 class 4 x 4 this year with forked brows. I still can't figure out if its a 5 x 5 or a 4 x 4 with two kickers.

Seems to me if the point emminates from the main beam then it is a separate point but ...........

It always seemed to me that guys that called a smal 4x4 with brow tines a "Nice 10 point" were trying to compensate for something.

Maybe a little "light in the pants?"

I moved from Ontario to Alberta a few years ago and I find myself referring to Whitetails as 8points rather than 4x4 and Mulies or Elk as 4x4 6x5 etc.

I also wondered about whitetail's with the can opener on the brow tine, that's what I call it when 1 of the brows splits, looks like a can opener to me. is this counted as 1 point or 2? not concerned about miny splits, for argument sake lets say there was a 2" small tine and a 4" main of the same brow.

Split tines actually result in deductions using the B&C scoring system.
