Just a point that has probably been brought up many times.We have two ways
of counting points on our Deer, the Eastern and Western count.
For you new hunters that are not familiar with this in the East we count all of the points on both sides of Deer antlers while in the west we only count one side.A 4 point in B.C. would be an 8 point in N.S.
dont know why this is and am wondering where the dividing line is.
 
Also in BC we only count the brow tines on whitetails.

What we call a 4 point mulie would be called a 10 point in Ontario! (Assuming the mulie had brow tines as not all mulie bucks have them)
 
We never count brow tines ...... only what is on the main beam. That really confuses some American hunters cause what they call a eight point buck, we call a "doe"..... :wink:

When I refer to a 5x5 buck, he has 5 big tines on both sides, excluding the brow tines.
 
I usually call mule deer by the amount of points on their largest antler (aka 4 pt)

with Whitetails I will either call them an 8 pt or a 4x4

Boo, what you call a 4pt mulie in BC, we would call a miracle in Ontario, because we don't have mule deer here. How do you guys count a non-typical rack like 4 one one side and 3 on the other?

i'd call it a 4x3.

don't usually count the small "extra" points on a muley, a 4 pt might have 2 or 3 little stickers on it but it is still a 4 pt. unless of course it is only a 3 pt, then one of those small points would make it a legal 4 point (in areas that have a 4 pt restriction).
 
We call the side with the most points.We have a 4 point or bigger season here in B.C. and if it has 4 points on one side and three on the other it is a legal four point to shoot.I would call that a 4x3 Sorry for you guys who only have Whitetails but they are better eating than Mulies.Talked to a guy last week who shot one of each.
He said that the Whitetail was for eating and the Mulie was for sausage.I have shot my share of and eaten both but I always try to make sure that I get my Whitey first.I have a 4 point(8 point eastern count) whitetail in the freezer and am ready to go looking for my Mulie now.Nothing that wrong with Mulie Steaks and Roasts and they come
pretty big.

I call bull#### on that one! LoL

I have shot enough of both species to tell you that the average mule deer is better eating than the average flag-tail.
 
I describe a buck by the number of tines on each side and the approximate B&C score.As an example A 150class 5x5.Of course if you shoot a young buck that scores poorly calling it an 8 point sounds much better than calling it a 100 class 4x4. :)

Well me and a lot of other hunters here in the Okanagan usually get one of each
and the Whitey is the choice here.When and if you have shot over fifty Deer as I have then you might change your mind .By far the majority of hunters that I
know prefer the Whitey.Dont get me wrong.I have and hope to enjoy lots more
Mulie steaks and roasts but Whitey comes first.To each his own.
 
Is that why so many of you Easterners cant wait to get to B.C.or Alberta where we have real game to shoot like Bisghorns,Goats,a good supply of Elk and everything
that you have back east except not near as much BULL#### or BULL####TERS
out here.Have lived in Hog town and Trenton.Also was born in N.S. and traveled
pretty well all of Canada.B.C.all the way.We also have things here called Grizzlies
here that would make a lot of you Easterners #### your pants.
