I have always been a Lab man but my last dog was a pointing Lab that I bought from Illinois.I am almost 60 so I have really appreciated how a pointing lab works. My dog is 9 years old so I am starting to look for a replacement. There are plenty of pointing lab kennels in the States but I would like to buy in Canada if I can find the right dog.If anybody has any information I am all ears.
Thanks RJA

When I bought my Vizsla 10 years ago, Liz Outram used to have a line of pointing labs. I don't see them on her website anymore, but she will likely point you in the right direction (see what I did there?).

blackjackkennels.com there based out of Kansas if memory serves. I have never owned or seen one in the flesh. But like you I have always had labs, hunted pheasants, am getting older, and can't chase flushing labs like I used to. If I was going to spend big dollars on a lab this is the kennel it would be coming out of. Take a look at there site I think you will like what you see.

RJA, just saw this yesterday while I was browsing Kijiji.

Not trying to hijack, but I also just heard about pointing Labs, since the other half won't let me have my English pointer. I settled on a Lab. Any one know Pointing Lab Breeders in Ontario :)

The first ;ab I ever trained by myself , I trained to pint.
That was about 45 years ago!
Love a pointing lab that will flush on command!

If you are not stuck on Labs, there are 30 or so European Versatile gun dog breeds have had a 100 year head start in breeding dogs that can point, retrieve and track on both land and water. Pointing labs are good dogs, but a very recent attempt to re-create their success.

Unfortunately or fortunately the OP is stuck on Labs. I get it, Labs are great dogs, had one myself and enjoyed every minute. Longwalker does have a point however. If you want a pointing dog there are far better choices.

Not that you care... but I am philosophically opposed to "pointing" labs... Labs are a flushing/retriever... breeding for the pointing trait weakens the breed as a whole, IMO. If you want a pointing dog, there are many true pointing breeds with excellent temperments.

The best grouse dog I personally owned was Max, an English Setter. He was the show variety but he had his full hunting instincts. He taught himself how to point, I was just along for the ride. I love my Brittany's ( Harley is my second) but for straight pointing ability Max wins hands down. Four hundred plus years of breeding will trump 100 or so years every time. In fact Setters are one of the foundation breeds of Brittany's. But if you love Labs then getting one that has some pointing ability is probably a decent compromise. Interestingly the Lab pretty much disappeared in NA but was kept alive in the UK. As a popular breed it has been compromised to a degree by puppy mills but certainly not destroyed. This in large part due to the hunting community which was not interested in looks as much as performance in their breeding. My Lab, Beau, was 90 lbs of happy who was in for anything I attempted. He attacked a black bear who was trying to come into our yard once, the bear decided to go elsewhere. Good dogs.
