Police confiscate WW2 tank hidden in cellar

Tanks used to be fairly common out here , the loggers would buy them and pull out the diesel engines . I don't know if they chopped them up for steel or what? I know of a few that are decorating the ocean floor.

Looks like it is the Friedrich Flick post war built Panther that came out of the UK after all. Strange that the German government is seizing the property, governments doing what governments do.................all in the interest of "public safety". Maybe there are other facets to this story not making the news and time will tell.

Please tell us more - I've never heard of this.

Interesting question - why DID they confiscate it? Here in UK there are a great many main battle tanks and artillery pieces in private hands, as the upcoming War & Peace show in Kent would readily testify. I've permanently loaned both of mine - a Mk 13 ]Stillbrew] ex-Berlin Chieftain and a Soviet 2S1 to the IWM at Duxford, since they won't fit in MY garage. In fact, they wouldn't fit in my house without sticking out somewhere.

There's certainly a lot of information not included in the article, and none of us are familiar with Germany's laws regarding military vehicles, I'm sure. But it seems the tank had been de-militarized, and REGISTERED, and it wasn't exactly a secret that the guy had it. Now all of a sudden it's a danger to the public?

Of course there's the matter of the apparent Nazi-stolen art they were investigating, and this may be them throwing their weight around to pressure that point. But the guy would have been like 10 years old at capitulation, so I don't think we can ascribe any war crimes to him. Now his *family* may well have had some ranking party members…

Not just a tank:
