Polishing Media Sizes

Looking at buying some bulk media and I’m wondering which sizes to go with. Walnut, cob and stainless shot are all being considered.

I do not like the (Lyman?) treated polishing media with the red or green chit added - the dust from the additive never goes away and plugs up dies, and are basically a pia. Princess auto walnut media is untreated, I add bit of Nu Finish polish and that's all I used for long while.

Walnut and corn cob are used dry in a vibratory case cleaner. Can be used in a rotary tumbler too though.

Stainless steel pins are used with soap and water in a sealed rotary tumbler like a rock polisher. Almost everyone who has experience with the wet stainless system swears by it.

I buy the 50 pound bag of fine walnut at princess Auto. About $30

It is so fine that it does not pug up flash holes.

I think stainless pins are 1 x 10mm.

The stainless steel pins that came with my Frankford Arsenal cleaner are 1 mm in diameter, 7 mm long.

Has any one used actual stainless shot? The sizing runs from less than 1mm to 5 or 6mm. It’s spherical rather than pins.

I have not but, the next tumbler I'm building will use standard Frankford SS media in an octagonal stainless tumbler.
If I were to add something to the pins, it would be 1mm stainless shot.
Stainless media can be quite expensive, where are you planning to buy them?

The pins in the Frankford kit are just the right size to span the opening on any 6.5mm case which is bloody annoying! I pull them out with very small needle nose.

I’m in the same boat, thought about reselling the leftovers on here. I might just go with walnut for now. Just hoping a customer needs something soon so I can share the shipping.

To help with dust and fines, add a drier sheet cut in 1" strips to your corn or walnut media.

I moved to the lizard bedding from the pet stores for walnut media. It is actually smaller in grain size than the gun store stuff and doesn't get stuck in the primer holes nearly as bad.
