I did a search but no results. So.... I have an old beat up 94. Bluing is 90% worn. I thought about polishing up the receiver to get a nice shiny steel look. But how to protect it and keep that nice shiny finish? A clear coat that won't peel? Is there such a product. Is this just an impossible task? Thanks for any replies.
 
Anytime I've tried to clear coat it ends up making the surface look dull. However I'm the first to admit that I didn't use the right stuff.

I've got tons of bare steel around the shop as tools and projects and as long as you keep them lightly oiled they won't rust. As long as the last thing to touch the receiver before it goes in the safe is your lightly oiled polishing rag then all will be well. However finger oils are quite acidic and can lead to rusting issues. Similarly if this is to be a bush gun then water and extended outings will lead to rusting issues unless you work at keeping it dry and cleaning and oiling it lightly at the end of each day. But as a short outing day trip sort of deal you should be fine. Oddly enough this is just about the sort of treatment it should get if it's blued as well.

Now to be fair some grades of steel are more rust prone than others. If you notice the surface constantly going to darker grey (the first signs of rust) then just do one more polish job and get it re-blued.
 
I've often thought of polishing up a rifle and then spraying on some clear duracoat to make the whole thing look stainless. Like BCRider said, it would probably make the surface look dull, but if they have a clear gloss duracoat, then it might be just the thing. I've used the regular duracoat, which works phenomenally, so the clear should work just the same.

For wax even simple oil is a solvent. Wax is not a durable finish for metals or anything that'll see regular applications of solvent based cleaners as any firearm will see.

Now for the wooden parts that'll be removed before the serious cleaning begins? That's a whole other deal. Then it's great stuff.

The other option is to get it re-blued or apply something such as DuraCoat or equivalent.

Frankly unless the barrel is polished as well then I don't see the attraction of a bare metal receiver in any case. And then it's only because you're wanting to make it appear to be stainless. Frankly? I'd get it re-blued.... but I prefer blue on steel. YMMV as the saying goes.

I like shiny things and have polished up receivers, stainless steel,knife blades and just about any thing else to a real high shine that looks like chrome,is durable and in the end i dont use any spray on crap. Gonna shoot ya a pm and discuss this with you as it takes to long to type it out....
 
Well - The act of polishing tends to improve corrosion resistance, as your are reducing the roughness of the surface - less opportunity to hold moisture and create rust pockets. Things get even better if the steel has been alloyed, as Nickel and Chromium enhance oxidation resistance.
So a high polish with a light coating of oil may be the ticket...
 
Polish stainless (if a shooter, not a collector) equal to a re finish blue ;)
I would blast the thing, follow brownells video library, excellent on finishing stuff.
after blasting with what they say works best, then you could even chrome it:D
