Time for another poll- which American gunmaker made the best .357 magnum? Colt Python or S&W Model 27. Both are timeless classics and unfortunately are no longer made.

I had S&W's & have tried Pythons.

Here are my comments ( My opinion only ).
Colt Python. Very well built, exec gun but has a tendency to go out of time and require repairs.

S&W. Also very well built but some quality issues through the years under different management.

Based upon my own experience I would select an S&W model 27 built in the quality years.

agree with pitdog boy, in that one of four pythons owned over the years have "gummed up" never thought that would happen but it did and it is in the shop getting checked over, not sure if it needs cleaning or full re-tune

have owned a smith 28 highway patrolman years ago, but not a 27 which might have or should have smoother lock up, aside from exterior high finish

between pythons and the smith 686, the balance is almost identical now.

pythons were built on the .41 frame so was superior to the k frame, but smith came out with the L frame, and shameless copy of the underlug, aka python

imho, comparing pythons and smiths is like comparing apples and orange, in how the actions are, python has the stacking before the hammer falls, and smith with a reasonable tune up is just as smooth, esp for ppc, hard to describe but other cgn members would know about this to clarify.

Pythons are beautiful wheelguns but I've never quite been able to warm up to them.

The S&W Model 27 is a classic though.

If this "poll" had a vote option, I'd "x" for the S&W.... ;) :p

Model 27 for me. I have both. The Python is nice to take out of the safe and fondle, the 27 (no dash) is nice to take out of the safe and fondle ... and shoot.

Why doesn't the most innovative revolver produced in the last 70 years not even rate a mention?

I love my dan wesson 357. It's six inch, stainless, and has a buttery smooth short throw action. The quick change tensioned barrel, adjustable cylinder gap, shank style grip post and very cool looks are all gravy.

'Cause they're paper weights.... :p

Their innovative removable barrel with lock nut doesn't stay put.
After a 100 or so shots, the barrel starts backing up into the
cylinder wall. Makes it very difficult for the cylinder to rotate
and wears out the forcing cone face of the barrel.

And there isn't much you can do to the DA pull.

Best out of the box revolver in mass production might be the
Manurhin MR-73 series. I have never fired one personally, but
have seen some high masters use them very effectively at
50 yards with iron sights.

Yours must be defective because mine works extremely well. The barrel stays locked up tight, and nothing needs to be done to the DA pull.
