Until I saw this topic discussed on another trap shooting forum, I had no idea just how controversial it is :D! So, at the risk of some fist-fights, heart-attacks and divorces here at CGN ;), here goes:

What's the best choke for 16 yard trap?

I don't think you will get the contravercy here that you may on sights such as trapshooters .com . That being said I do believe in competition you hinder yourself if you go any tighter than modified from the 16. I have shot PITA since the early 80's and while I practice with FULL choke I shoot MOD from the 16. I hold a 98.2% average in PITA

I could be a smart a** and say whichever one works best. Actually, I haven't been able to show any consistent difference between modified, improved modified or full having tried them all. But I use improved modified or full because I thought I could see holes in the pattern using 1 oz loads and modified choke during testing at 35 yards. Of course, after Bogman's post I'm switching back to modified.

I have been shooting ATA trap since 1974 and carry a 98.5% average and have used full, extra full , imp, mod. mod ,and have even shot good scores with imp cyl. BC Fred You are absolutely correct when you say what ever works . 16 yd targets is a mental game once you learn to break them its a matter of doing exactly the same thing over and over and over again. between 1974-1995 i would shoot about 10,000 rounds a yr. Now i only shoot recreationally still lots of fun.

Full choke, 1 ounce of 8 shot at 1235 fps. I like smoking those clays. Best has to be when I look at the guy next to me and ask if hit the bird because its gone.

I've used most types of chokes, but main one is full. I shot a couple years ATA and never had a problem with the full choke. I've been in shoot-offs were they had the trap set in hole 4 and 5, still didn't seem to have an effect with the tight pattern. If your in the zone, it's hard to miss, no matter what you're shooting.

I mainly shoot full at 16 yards. Could be because my 1100 has a fixed choke :D. I shot my 3200 last summer with 7/8 oz loads and still got some serious smoke from the IM barrel. Shoot what works for you and PRACTICE!

If I have to pick, I like the smoke I get from IM, but mostly my reason is Just because but I supect that Bogman has it right.

With that average time to try it with a 28ga full choke and 3/4 oz of 7 1/2. Talk about fun:) Mind you your friends are going to think you lost if for a while.I know mine did:eek:

I have always shot nothing but full or extra full ever since I started the game. If I am on and getting good hard driving inkspots, you know the kind you see the vortex in then it gives me confidence. I would rather smoke them than chip them. My confidence drops way off when I am chipping them or just breaking them but smoking them keeps me focused and happily in the zone. I'd rather a clean miss than a chippy break!

I use improved modified for 16 yds and full beyond 21yds.
I shoot 1 1/8 oz., 3 dram loads only.
My Mossberg 835 pounds clays when I'm on my game.

Hey Shell Shucker don't you feel a bit undergunned with that outfit? I don't see a belt feed for one thing. How do you get your 9th and 10th follow-up shot in? You are shooting at 16 yards after all, that means the bird is somewhere around 30 yards or so when you shoot it. I suppose 3 drams is OK, but only at the 16 and only with #2 or better and only with 1 1/8 oz or better. Personally I think 1 1/4 is a minimum and most guys would move up if they were any further back, for sure. Remember that tricked out Mossbergs are only used by quiet types doing close up work on a personal basis. They don't really set up for shooting at things further out;). Fred
