The forestock would be named for the gunsmith Alexander Henry. Falling block rifles built by him sometimes had the similar style of forestock that the Ruger #1A and #1S have copied.

Thanks. Any notion on why he did it? What is/was the function?

I can't find the reason, but my research did turn up that gunsmith Alexander Henry was an uncle to the explorer/fur trader Alexander Henry I was thinking of.
