POLL: How many practice with open sights (just in case)

I use see thru mounts on my 30/30 and regularly practice with the irons.
The irons are zeroed at 50 yrds. I shot a deer last year with the irons.

All the Enfields and Mausers I shoot only have irons. My Remington 700 300 mag has irons, in the event that I need them they can be used.
I believe it is advantgeous to know how to use them.

I have some rifles that have no scope. Depending on where I am hunting dictates which gun I take. Open sights are better in the swamp. Scopes are better in the fields.

Just curious Cat , why that particular caliber ? I could think of a few calibers that i'd think are much better , that I personally would much rather use on a custom rifle.

because i wanted a classic cartridge for this style of rifle, and even though it is old, the .303 Brit is hardly a dog in the ballistics department when it comes to a stalking rifle, or even long range fun for that matter.
I've got a mess of 30's, and 6.5's , but only two .303 Brits - only a factory longbranch and the other a custom scoped job my father built into a one piece stalk, neither of which suited my needs .

The chamber that is going to be cut into this barrel will not be a SAMMI spec chamber, and I plan to build some very seriouslly accurate brass for it, neck turnd to mtch the chamber.
The leade will be cut either for a Seirra Prohunter or a Speer, depending on which Bill has found to be better in the rifles he has built before...

I only asked , because I hardly see anyone actually doing anything with a .303 other than using it as a "bush" gun. Interesting, I'd love to see how it turns out. I like the caliber myself. but never considered a project like you are undertaking, with the rifle as well as the brass.

What gun nut can say that they don't own a iron sighted rifle? Chirst if you only own scoped rifles you need to go somewhere else!

I just closed a deal on a .45 - 70 with irons only........ at least I won't have to worry about a scope kiss! lol

I find open sight more challening, however a scope makes it much easier to see ones tgt as on gets older.
