Ive narrowed it down to a few rifles, all in 30-06. Im leaning towards the Marlin due to target crown and adjustable trigger, and the fact its a Marlin, but still want to see what you all have to say. The Axis is nice in stainless and the trigger can be easily trimmed to get a good pull. The 4x4 has all the bells and whistles but its a Mossberg rifle. I plan to get bases and rings (unless already mounted) and mount a Vortex 4-12 or 4-16 on it. Cheers.

Good choices, but I couldn't easily say. The Savage will have more aftermarket parts and likely higher resale value.

Nice, lots of votes! But please feel free to leave a comment as to why you voted as you did, and if there's a rifle im missing for the same price, please let me know. Cheers.

You could buy a used, higher end Savage, or Remington 700, which could both be tinkered with immensely (trigger, stock, threaded/shortened or entirely new barrel, floorplate/detachable magazines).

You'll never go wrong with a 30-06, especially if you handload, and stainless actions and barrels are stiffer than carbmoly.

Go one step further and invest a little more and get the Savage Weather Warrior which is stainless and has an adjustable accutrigger and accustock and is a nicer rifle for not much more. I have an XL7 and a Weather Warrior both great rifles and I like both but wish I had just bought the weather warrior first and only. Mine are in .308 or I would sell you the XL7 if it was 30-06. Sighted in and went hunting once with Leupold scope.

anyone with a xl7 that can give me an accuracy report with factory ammo? I figured that more people would vote Axis due to the popularity, but im happy to see a good amount also voted Marlin, as its still my 1st choice. I dont care for the look of the Ruger American one bit, I think its ugly. At $400 im already at the tops of my budget, as I still have to consider scopes, but i did see a rem 700 for 500 somthing and it peaked my interest, but its still not on top.

Didn't vote.
I would never waste my $ on the American rifles that just get pumped out of the factories like these ones are.
Would rather spent 3x the cash on one that I am proud of owning & that I can hand down through the generations.
While these may be good to acquire when first entering into the hobby, I have a taste for the higher end pieces.
So because of that I didn't vote.

Unless Savage has improved their Red Rider Axis (formerly the Edge) I don't know why anyone would want one. Yes, I did own one. The Marlin XS series, however, are the best entry level value rifle out there IMO. Yes, I own one. The Americans (even with the plastic magazine) are okay, but why buy one when the Marlins are available. $.02.

Yes this is a entry hunting rifle for me, but I want it to last a while. Perhaps one day when im older ill upgrade my collection to a higher standard, but for now, its easy on the wallet, and meat in the freezer.

I'd go with the Savage but if I found a better deal on the marlin I might be swayed. Not sure about the Mossberg at all.

its the same price for the Marlin vs the Axis, that is the stainless Axis, and only about 35$ more than the normal one. just costs me an extra 25$ in shipping to get it to me from the states. Marlin is 352$+tax and 50$ shipping. Still beats all the authorized Canadian Marlin Dealers.

Not as simple as just ordering a rifle from the states. I would look into that a bit more before making a decision. I don't like Mossberg at all. The axis is very popular. Just bought one for my girlfriend in .243. Haven't had a chance to use a marlin yet.

IMO. If your looking for a solid meat getter. You nailed it with the calibre. But might try to find a solid used rifle like a parkerhale. Can be found under 450$. Even a old 303brit would do the trick.

If you can spend a tad more the Weatherby Vanguard is likely the best entry level rifle that is currently out there.

Even if you can find a S1 you'd likely get it for not much more than $400.00.It is solid and accurate and reliable , likely shoots better than some higher priced options.
