So, why reply to the thread?

Didn't vote.
I would never waste my $ on the American rifles that just get pumped out of the factories like these ones are.
Would rather spent 3x the cash on one that I am proud of owning & that I can hand down through the generations.
While these may be good to acquire when first entering into the hobby, I have a taste for the higher end pieces.
So because of that I didn't vote.

You might be hard pressed to find a marlin xl7...They seem to have vanished. I would seriously consider the weatherby vanguard because it is a far better rifle than any of the three choices and doesn't break the bank. I own a ruger American in .243 and would have no problem recommending it but at 6.25 lb, it might not be that pleasant to shoot in .30/06.

I'd bet $ that all those folk who voted Axis, haven't tried a Marlin. Watch the EE and see how many like-new Axis come for sale compared to the X7. That will tell you something.

So what do you own otherwise? Lets see pics of your "higher end pieces".

I'd mention the TC dimension, like the vanguard it's a little higher on the price list but the ergonomics aren't bad at all.

Not as simple as just ordering a rifle from the states. I would look into that a bit more before making a decision. I don't like Mossberg at all. The axis is very popular. Just bought one for my girlfriend in .243. Haven't had a chance to use a marlin yet.

IMO. If your looking for a solid meat getter. You nailed it with the calibre. But might try to find a solid used rifle like a parkerhale. Can be found under 450$. Even a old 303brit would do the trick.
yea I know... IRUNGUNS has what im looking for so its not a problem. :D I almost jumped on a parker hale on the EE was a great deal but i was too late! D:

lol.

oh trust me, I have seen the steady flow of the Axis for a while now. I also find that theres alot more .270's for sale than 30-06, tells me that the 30-06 is what im looking for.

Stick with the Marlin. They balance nicely and have been durable/reliable for me. I've owned 1 in 270, own 1 in 308, and presently am selling one in 35 Whelen. The 270 shot 3/4"-1" groups with Federal Fusion 130gr. The 308 seems to favor 150gr Federal Power Shok (blue box) and 165gr Fusions. Both shot under 1" consistently. The Whelen (different barrel) seems to shoot everything well.

Only downfall is the blind mag IMO.

Personally I like the internal mag. Never lose it, and its adds more support to the stock than having to cut out a slot. fr a gun that will see 20 or 30 shots a year it will be fine, no combat reloading here ;)

No I hear ya,
and I agree that there is more benefit than hinderance. But when your constantly in and out of the truck on the logging roads and are not "legally" allowed to have a loaded gun in a vehicle. That's when it's a pain unloading, but no different than a lever gun.

I find it interesting, I had a like new Remington 700 BDL .30-06 that was late 80's early nineties model on EE recently for 595 and would have let it go for 500. Not one bite and all these people are buying junk throw away rifles for 400+. I upgraded to a Sako otherwise I would have kept it. no-one can tell me they couldn't muster another 100 dollars for a good rifle that will last a lifetime. BTW I traded the rifle to a dealer for 550. To each his own I guess?

Just for the record,
The Marlin is not junk nor bargain bin. Tough to find a bad review or displeased owner.

I don't have enough experience to properly review the XL7 granted, but from what I and many others have wrote is a common thing with these bargin guns are the super flexible stocks, sloppy triggers and overall poor fit and finish. Yes as many have done to fix this, buy a new stock and trigger for an extra couple hundred dollars. Now the price is right where it should have been for a better rifle in the first place. I understand these rifles generally serve the purpose but it seems to me "Penny wise, Pound foolish" is a fitting statement
