Got enough cash and Canadian Tire gift cards for my birthday that I want to stop by this weekend and pick up either a Mosin or a Russian SKS. It will just be for informal plinking , I am not worried about the cost of surplus , and luckily, my local CT carries ammo for both. SO.............Which would you pick? and why?

I'd try to get the Mosin carbine version. Saw one last night I could have had for 300 bucks, in great shape. I have the Mosin rifle, but prefer the carbine. Bolt actions are also easier to clean after shooting corrosive.

I have tons of actual hunting rifles. Have no desire to ever hunt with a milsurp. This is just gonna be for milk jugs, clay targets scattered on sandy hills, and possibly scattered paper zombie targets from 50-300 yards. I don't plan on scoping it either. Just open sites. I own an SVT 40 so that doesn't make the list of new guns.
This is just for one of the two of these that I don't own. The length of the Mosin kind of throws me off. Looks like a whaler oar.

both are fun, but i always take the mosin to the mil shoot. the sks would be a fun bush gun thou. flip a coin. they are still making sks's so if you don't get one now there will always be another time...
plus if you have the svt40, mosin is the same ammo.

If you don't have many other semi-autos I'd go with the SKS. Otherwise I personally prefer the 91/30- it's just an overall fun gun to shoot, never fails to bring a huge grin to my face when I have it out. And the cheap ammo compared to other larger calibers just makes it all the better.

Sarge,

Buy both! I bought both of mines from the YK CT and I requested to be able to pick the best from their inventory. The manager brought me in the backstore and let me look at all of them...they are used to it.
My Sks is a decent 1952 Tula refurb and my Mosin is a 1942 Ishvesk.
The local range doesn't allow firing "steel core" ammo tho...so keep that in mind..
