I have tons of actual hunting rifles. Have no desire to ever hunt with a milsurp. This is just gonna be for milk jugs, clay targets scattered on sandy hills, and possibly scattered paper zombie targets from 50-300 yards. I don't plan on scoping it either. Just open sites. I own an SVT 40 so that doesn't make the list of new guns.
This is just for one of the two of these that I don't own. The length of the Mosin kind of throws me off. Looks like a whaler oar.

I've got hunting rifles too...........although I don't why. Hunting with the milsurps and classics is so much more fun.

SKS 100%. They are the best firearm to throw lots of money at in MODS. Turn a $200 rifle into a $1000 obsession thats worth $350 when your done with it. Have fun.

The Mosin is far easier to clean.
The SKS is fun at first. But once you tire of it the fun is gone. They aren't accurate so target shooting has no thrill.

I take my sks to the range once in a while. I take one of my Mosin Nagants EVERY time I go to the range.
Enough said...

I would get the SKS first, then the Mosin next payday. As others have posted, the semi-auto is initially fun, but there's something really satisfying about shooting a full power 7.62 such as the Mosin.

Well that settles it (for now!!) The SKS wins, then , as suggested shortly down the road, the Mosin will reside with me. They have "sniper" versions there of the Mosin. What should I look out for with those? Are they complete fakes? Or is that scope actually "period" correct and able to withstand the recoil of the mosin? Just wondering........

The first thing to look for is the scope serial number on the shank of the receiver. Genuine Mosin snipers (and there are fakes and reproductions out there) will have the scope number stamped onto the receiver, and another serial number on the scope mount (often electropenciled). Often there will be a x-ed out number on the receiver and another one stamped in - this is OK as long as the second number matches the scope serial number. There should also be a witness line on the scope and mount to show how to line up the scope if the scope and mount are ever separated or removed from the rifle (which in the Red Army was only supposed to be done by the unit armorer). There may also be fairly rough machining (as opposed to a cast mount) on the scope mount as many of these rifles were produced under wartime production pressures.

These rifles were all refurbished and put into storage by the Soviets after the Second World War, so it's not unusual for the numbers of the scope and mount to be what is known as "forced matched" (restamping).

Well, I screwed my own poll up. I bought a Chinese SKS locally here in YK. Same price as a Russian. AND it came with 40 rounds to try it out immediately. THANKS ALL FOR THE SUGGESTIONS. Gonna wipe it down and take it out for a shoot. Pics up shortly.

Man i'd love a "nugget". Saw one in Canadian tire (odly) going for $700 correct me if im wrong but that seems a bit overpriced.
