I’ve hunted with a 12ga when I was a kid. Shells were cheap and available and I could hunt everything with it.
I mostly hunt small game though and as I gained experience and my aim got better I found myself blowing rabbits squirrels and grouse to pieces.
I now use a Stoeger coachgun in 410 imp/mod cylinder and it’s perfect. A direct hit and only just enough BBS to kill but still not shredded. I also have several 22/410 combos that I use as well.
I have to go with 16. It's not really reflected in the guns I currently own but that's more to do with opportunistic buying and selling. I'm down to two 16's from a high of 8. But there are a few on the wish list.
I use a .410 sxs for grouse in fairly open country but if I am in thick brush my 20 gauge sxs all the way. 12 gauge sxs for all my cowboy action matches and 12 gauge pump or semi shooting clays.
12 would be my fav as i can hunt anything in ontario with it. Loaded anyway i choose from light to heavy. Birdshot buck shot and ball. Easy to find in any platform. Can be had light or heavy. Offers enough space to become an artistic canvas. Although lately ive been craving a 410. Still like my big tens though
