For those of you who own / shoot both of these styles

How do the 'modern looking' 22 pistols like the Swiss Arms SA-22 or the SW M&P 22 and others compare to Ruger MK1-4s or Browning Buckmarks.

I'm especially interested in reliability with different brands of ammo, accuracy out of the box, good trigger pull, ergonomics, sight picture and ease of takedown.

I've owned and shot the entry level Buckmark in the past and apart from the sights and grip it was good (I wouldn't get the most basic sights version again) but I haven't shot the more modern style.

I have a ruger mkiii and an m&p 22. Reliability is on par. Ergonomics are close I favor the ruger a little. Trigger pull on m&p sucks whereas the ruger is quite nice. And the weight and trigger pull combination makes the mkiii worlds more accurate than the m&p. My groups double in size at least with the m&p

Best poly 22lr pistol I have ever had is the Grand Power K22s
extremely reliable, fantastic ergonomics and ease of take down.
I regret selling that pistol almost as much as my cz75 Kadet.

I suggest the Grand Power for sure

The Grand Power K22S it is! I’ve had one for like 6 months and IMHO it’s the best 22LR pistol on the 22LR pistol market available. It comes with 4 backstrap inserts for any hand shape one can imagine. All STEEL pistol except the grip of course. No zinc or aluminum alloys in the construction. The slide is moving on a steel chassis. It takes a few seconds to field strip. At 20-25 yards unsurpassed accuracy. Eats any ammo brand without problems.

I have and do own a selection of 22 pistols but have found the triggers on some modern plastic versions very lacking -- actually poor examples. I also have not heard of this Grand Power unit before this thread. How would you rate the trigger ? I do like what has been reported so far. Cheers

Ruger single six...never fails to fire, never fails to impress. Its not tactical, and it is slow to reload, but it is as much fun as shooting my 9mm.

Excellent. I measured mine in SA at 4.3-4.7 lbs and in DA at 7.7-7.9 lbs. Clearly two stage: the first stage very light, no creep and the second stage very crisp break.
One more thing which I didn't mention in my post above is the size of the pistol. It's a FULL size semi-auto pistol in .22cal. In essence it is thought of like a training pistol for the Grand Power K100, Q100, K100 X-trim and X-Calibur in 9mm Luger and larger calibers. That means that the grip as you can see in my pic is quite large. I guess that it might be uncomfortable for very small hands despite that there are 4 backstraps provided with the pistol. I wear an L size gloves (tight) so for me the grips fit superbly.
For the sake of clarity there is also another 22LR version, the Grand Power K22 X-trim but that one is over $200 more expensive that the base GP K22S. IMHO not really worth so much more money.

Keep trying others, S&W M-17, Ruger Mark II, CZ Kadet, Buckmark, keep coming back. It must love me too because I am the most consistently accurate with it.

Maybe nice but I would challenge the "best 22LR pistol on the 22LR pistol market available" statement to me a Smith 41 is in a higher class..and there are others..

I was shooting with someone else last weekend who had two semi auto .22 pistols. After jamming every 3-4 rounds on both guns I let him try my single six. He then placed a very tight paper group and asked me how often it jammed (that would be never).

Well, I was thinking more about 22LR plinkers like the Ruger, GSG 1911, Swiss Army, Browning 1911 etc. rather than about a Smith 41 which is a target pistol. Definitely, by comparison to other 22LR plinkers with reinforced polymer grips, the GP K22S is a shining star!

Showing my age here. Shooting ISU for years, I will tell you none of these are either classics or target pistols (the S&W 41 being the notable exception). Talk HI standard victor, Walther GSP, Hammerli, S&W Model 41(just barely). then you are in true target class pistols. Ruger? c'mon, not even in the same league. If you ever get the opportunity to try a GSP, then you will understand, but unfortunately that style of shooting is out of favor these days. I've seen .22 gsp's going for as little as $750 these days. They aren't meant to shoot two handed, so no one wants them
