polyurethane varnish semi gloss

I'm currently refinishing the wood on my 10ga. I'm new to wood work. Can I use polyurethane varnish over top stained wood? If so is there any steps to prep for? I've stained it Grey with minwax wood stain. I somewhat like the result. Will polyurethane varnish change the color or appearance?

Wipe the stock with rubbing alcohol prior to spraying with the poly & you should be OK.
