My 223 has been on fire lately. I have three small kids and therefore my hunting is limited, but I have been able to pick off a couple coyotes from my front step. Because I live near the local dump I have coyotes travelling to and fro through the field in front of my house. In the last month I have got one at 300 yards and one at 340 without a miss. I was starting to think I was a bit of a sniper. It was time for me to get put in my place.
Yesterday I had the day off and the kids went to daycare. Time for some real coyote hunting! Went for a bit of a drive and set up near a wet marshy area where I have deer hunted in the past and have seen coyotes. Call, sit, call, sit and a half hour goes by and its time to try else where. I had high hopes and those hopes were dashed so I was starting to take the hunt less seriously and enjoy the day. So off to the next spot. This spot is a quarter of bush with some beaver ponds on the south end facing an open field. With a nice North breeze blowing I set up at the south side of the beaver pond behind a little spruce tree with the wide open field down wind. I've never hunted the area before and have my doubts, but other than that it's perfect. Blow the Fox Pro a couple of times and look around trying to figure out exactly where they will come sneaking around to get a better look. As my eyes pass over the beaver pond I see three coyotes running full bore towards me. they are coming wide open across the beaver pond and have less than 200 yards to go before they are on top of me. Great! Right? Not so much. I have not chambered a round yet, removed my scope covers or taken my safety off. And it's -22c and I've got big ol mitts on. F#$K! Get myself all sorted out only to look up and see the leader has pulled up 50 ish yards away and is looking right at me. No problem. I've got him in my scope and he's a goner. I squeeze......... or perhaps yank the trigger as he darts off. I empty my three shot clip at various dating balls of fur and.... NOTHING! All this because I was not prepared. The only thing that would have made it more embarrassing is if my pants would have been down around my ankles. (Does the walk of shame back to the truck). Went fishing in the afternoon
