It's been tough times here in this part of Ontario for the last 4 years. Work where I live is slow and I've been forced to sell off a once extensive collection of firearms and accessories. I was down to my last bolt gun (that I can shoot) and realized that it had to go too. Major Bummer...

As I'm considering how to address the situation I conclude that I don't have to do without I just have to downsize. I've got it all figured out, used Savage 10 for about half the proceeds from my last sale. Then my Corporate VP friend rains on my parade, granted he did it gently, but a smack up side the head is still a smack up side the head. I was about to loose all hope untill I saw some claim about how a 17 HMR could shoot fairly flat out to 200 yards. After a few trips to our sponcers web site's I find the H&R Sporter 17 HMR. Epp's had them listed at just over $200. I've since found them for quite a bit less but since that operation isn't contributing to the bills here they don't get mentioned.

Now I could spew on about the brand etc., but as I'm a shooter not a gun writer I'll spare you and get to it.

First for it's size it's heavy, as you see it my cheap bathroom scale claimed I gained 10 lbs with it in my hand. The trigger isn't all that helpful either. Ready for action there's no travel and it breaks clean, but it's a loooong way from light. I have two improvised ranges in my area. One is an honest 100 metres and the other is about 350 metres. While zeroing the scope I fired 10 shot groups as it makes up for my inconsistant sight picture. The best was six of ten shots in about 1/2". All the groups since have been five shots as I've been trying to complete the 1/2 MOA challenge in Precision Rifles. I've had no luck to date but I blame that on the metre of snow I'm shooting off of. I'm inconsistant to begin with so shooting prone on a surface that changes everytime you move is less than ideal. Best group so far was three shots intended to foul the bore, less than a 1/4". The 5 bull target below is pretty much representitive of every group I've fired. 90% of the groups fired have been 1 - 3/4 MOA. The steel target has only two hits on it at 100 metres, the rest were all at 200 metres. The 3" plate is too easy to hit at 200.

If your looking for a starter rifle for the price you can't go wrong.

H&R definitely makes some good-shooting guns for very little money. I have one just like yours but in .17HM2 and would never sell it.

Great report, glad to hear you're making the most of a bit of a tough situation. Sometimes...it's easy to get caught-up in the best of this or that, but this past weekend was a great reminder that there is tons of simple pleasure to be had in inexpensive guns. My least expensive rifle is my Marlin 795 and I maybe put 400-500 rounds through it in the last 2 days. I like bolt guns more, but this thing runs like a top, and really punches above it's weight class in the accuracy dept. Plenty of empty shotgun hulls paid the price. :)

One of my friend brought me is Sporter Nef in 17 HMR to have the scope zero( i do that a lot as a service to my friends), Bushnell 4X12X40 Banner, did the job, 1 and1/2 inch high at 100 yards, zero at 155 yards, so that was done... In the middle of that week, i got a coyote crossing the field at 120 yards from the patio door, this little 17gr pill just killed that beast easy, i was surprise how fast it went down, that sir is a great little caliber that pack a lot of punch... Congrat on your new rig... JP.

Sorry to hear you are having hard times - the good thing about that is it forces you to gather your thoughts and re-evaluate what is important.

I always always wanted a NEF sportster in .22lr but for some reason, they were rarer than eligible women who put out in Dartmouth. The closest I got was an NEF Handi-Rifle in .22hornet which I sold :( It was freaking awesome, but as I didn't shoot it that much, it had to go - very practical rifle if you can hunt with it in your jurisdiction. I got 2" split groups, 5 shots with factory Winchester hp at 100 yards with iron sights off a bench.

Wow Epps has a Sportster Compact in .22lr!

I am sorely tempted. . .
