Poor man's shoot N see targets

They are so easy to make and cheap. At Walmart I buy a binder of kid's construction paper for $3.00 I just don't use the black and white one's that come with it. $6 for 200 meters of clear tape and a can of flat black paint and white paint for the aiming point. Just make any size hole in a piece of cardboard for the white paint. They work as good as any store bought. And gives me something to do during winter. I could probably sell these if I was so inclined. Hmm

after more experiment, it looks like I really overthink this. All it takes is to print out the target in bright color in contrast to the black(the bullet holes). I tried bright green on bright yellow background and vice versa and found bright yellow target on green background works great for me. Either buy some ledger paper($15 for 500 sheets), or print two letter size and put them together. works very well. no need to buy the shoot & see at all. :)

Hi, just wonder if anyone has done this DIY following the instruction on youtube.

I am curious if I can replace the duck tape with a coat of clear spray paint instead which will be fast for the process. Not sure about what would be the cost and if it's worth it as all the youtube videos are from states where all the materials are much cheaper than in Canada.

I did the packing tape over flo green Bristol board, a coat of cheap flat black spray paint and a shot of white for some contrast target spots and those things work better then the store bought! And I can make them whoever size I want! I will never buy targets again!

2 Big a$$ sheets of Flo Green Bristol board from the Dollar Store = $2
1 roll of clear packing tape from the dollar store = $1
1 can of cheap Charlie's flat black spray paint. = $3
1 can of cheap Charlie's flat white spray paint (had it left over). = $0

$6 and I have enough to make more targets then I will shoot in the next couple of outings and I can make a bigger one for some farther shots. Works awesome.

Has anyone tried just using coloured tape instead of the clear tape/spray paint combo?

It's the clear tape and cheap spray paint combo that make it work so well. The bullet only punches a hole as big as the round, but it causes a larger shock when it hits the tape, this is reflected by the paint flaking off around the hole, with a bright piece of cardboard behind the tape and the tape being clear you will now see this impact from a long ways away.

Also reusable as you only need to put another piece of tape over the holes, spray them black again, put some more white target spots and off ya go again!

I know....I'm cheap!

I tried the construction paper neon pink. Clear packing tape and black spray paint. Worked really well but seemed more expensive when you add up all your cost and time.

Thanks for this. I just purchased a 50 pack of 12 x 18 from Amazon. Best deal ever and shipped for free.

can one of you guys post some pics of what the DIY targets look like before and after? just wondering...

Don't have a before unfortunately, but I did some tests. Had to see it for myself. So I bought a 5 sheet pack from Dollarama. So that's $1 for 5 neon sheets of 12x18. I wanted to try the duct tape idea so I bought blue duct tape for $1.25. Shipping tape is $1. Acrylic paint is $1 and brush is $1. The duct tape idea is worthless, expensive, and ineffective. After 2 3/4 sheets, I'm already out. The other is the acrylic paint on top of shipping tape and works alright. Here's a pic:

So the top is simply blue duct tape over top a neon paper (better than construction paper). The two bottom targets are shipping tape on top of neon paper and painted over with acrylic paint. I didn't want to use spray paint since I would have to make the targets outside in the freezing cold. I wanted to make these targets in the comfort of my house. So that's why I used acrylic paint. Another experiment that I have yet to try is that I bought 8.5x11 beige coloured cardstock paper for $5.99/50 sheets. It's a higher quality paper than construction paper, so that's why it's a bit expensive. I then also bought neon coloured spray paint ($4.99/4oz.) rather than regular black paint. I had a hard time seeing the black targets at 100m with iron sights. This should be cheaper than using acrylic paint. So, we're looking at what $.30-$.40 per target....probably. Still better than $1/target...or $0.70/target (cheapest I found).
