The bolt heads, have to be "sized". After the right size of bolt head was selected, one that was slightly 'long' then the face of the bolt head was sanded with emery paper, very carfully at right angles, until the proper headspace was acheived. This was only done by the unit armourer!

"...sanded with emery paper..." That'd polish it nicely, but would take years to remove enough steel to do anything to the bolt head. Polishing a bolt head will do nothing. Headspace is and was adjusted with headspace guages and another bolt head. No polishing or fitting involved.
