Where are you guys sourcing your popcorn kernels for your bear baits? Baiting is only a couple months off and am getting nice and antsy to get things together.

I would assume that's pre popped? Gonna be running a few baits so need a good amount of bait to keep them operating without breaking the bank. Will definitely be looking at a big used freezer to keep some beaver carcasses for spring bear.

Gasp - You lads must be from the city. You can buy corn feed with or without molasses in large bags (25kg) for about 15$ from any rural feed store (eg Co-op, etc)

No, bought a 50 lb bag of kernels from the theater and popped it in my turkey fryer. I have also made caramel corn blocks in a 5 gallon pail. I have gotten away from the popcorn, as I find it very labor intensive. There is a place out of Minneapolis that sells bait commercially, and I have ordered from baitem907 dot com. I usually run oats mixed with fryer oil and a caramel scent concentrate from a feed mill, and I also source meat scraps from a local butcher shop

Live in the suburbs so about ten minutes from the nearest feed mill so will be adding some cracked corn and molasses to the baits as I did last year. Thinking to check out bulkbarn for "popcorn" kernels and maybe incorporate some different extracts in the mix. A 50lb bag of kernels must make a hell of a lot of popcorn. Got enough time on my hands to mess around with making up my own baits to hopefully save a bit of coin. Still gotta buy some fish oil as I slacked last year on the fishing and therefore couldn't brew up my own.

For the op this likely wont help but in Winnipeg there is a movie theatre and concession wholesaler that will sell either raw kernel or will actually pop it for you. Harlans is the company name if I recall and I would have to assume that there would be a similar company in your area. I bought the 50 lb bag and trust me it goes a fairly long way

I buy mine from the bulk barn as well. make sure you double or triple bag them... they make a hell of a mess when those flimsy little bags tear open.

I set up in the garage while I am getting my cameras and stuff ready and run my hot air popper into garbage bags in a big steel trash can. A full bag from bulk barn will make 2 large (drum sized) garbage bags full of popped corn, and costs under $20. (or at least it did last year, haven't checked prices yet.)

Cool guys. I'd like to keep baits and lures under $200 so if I buy a few bags of the kernels(most likely bulkbarn)that should leave me some coin for a few quarts of fish/seal oil plus some different extracts to try out. May have a partner this year, a buddy of mine whom I've been recruiting(does his firearms hunting course in a couple weeks) so will at least have help lugging around the bait and covering setup costs. Psyched to get up there and get things going. Will be combo hunting and trapping and naturally better odds of snaring a bear but I'd really like to take one from the stand with rifle or possibly bow. Not after a trophy really, more meat and thinning out the population some. Pretty well any bear is fair game except of course a sow with cubs.

Popcorn is an awesome bait, add some sweetness and you are sure to get hits. Cherry cool aid, syrup yumm....

Spoke with a trapper some time ago and he swore by beaver meat for bears and bear meat for coyotes.

Got 10kg of kernels n gonna start popping tomorrow. Being my first time baiting with popcorn I'm curious to see how far the popcorn will go. I'll be mixing in some sweet stuff with the popcorn for sure and will also be hanging out suckers at my bait sites. Start baiting next weekend and can't wait to get out.
