Hello, I checked the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, read through the Hunting Regulation Summary for Ontario, and couldnt find this. I was wondering if it was legal to hunt them, or would I need a trapping licence?

they are considered a survival food.....you can killthem with a stick...so unless they eating the crap out of your cabin...let them be....
this is what i was told years ago...if it was true or not........i neaver did check into it..

They can be pure hell on the dogs......I've had to dope up one of my dogs 3 times this year and pull quills from his snout...so I'm out after'em on my farm...and use them as a bullet test medium.

In Nova Scotia they are commonly hunted along with rabbits, squirells, chipmunks, skunks and coyotes as they are all classified as "other harvestable wildlife" and only require a $3 stamp.

Have you ever seen a porky den, they lay around in there own sh!t until it disolves. If you want to eat that go ahead, I will survive on sirloin etc., or die trying to find it.

All I know is when you hit them with a .22-250 there is usually a large puff of quills in the air and a large "wump" sound a split second later.

By doing this, you are saving the lives of many jackpines and protecting many house hold pets. Not to mention any buildings that are sided with plywood are a favourite of these prickly rodents.

There is no controlled season on porcupines in Ontario and they are not protected so it would be legal to hunt them.

I kill every porcupine I can. They are a hazard to dogs, woodlots and buildings. My day is always brightened a little when I see a dead porkie at the side of the road.

I always shoot them NO MATTER WHAT...the really do a number on the trees in this area, not to mention the dogs. They do fall under the rodent category in NB and anytime i see one i shoot it. i know of people that eat them but i've never tried it myself.

If you have a farm like me you have to get rid of them. Cattle and horses will try to sniff them out of curiosity as they cross pastures, and believe me it ain't easy to get quills out of a 1500 lb hereford's nostrils! Horses have to be tranquilised or put to sleep first. And yes I have eaten them and found them very good when cooked like rabbit. JITC

beeper boy : Good Point !

Like the Butcher who asked the lady ...
" Madam, would you like to try some nice fresh beef tongue ? "

" Eewww " she replied, " I just couldn't eat anything that came out of an animals mouth - I'll just take a dozen eggs ! "

Right !
