Porcupine recipes

Dont gut it...completely cover it with thick layers of mud/clay...put it on an open fire pit with lots of red embers....wait a few hours...break open the now hardened clay and voila...a fine quilless pit roasted pine pig...enjoy.

By the way...it tastes like chicken.

Has anyone tried porcupine and how was it prepared? Just curious.

I had no idea you could eat the things, heck I saw my first one this year. Anyone aware of the regs on these in Alberta, or are they considered the same as rabbits, yotes ect? Found one walking through a field about 50 yards from me and not wanting to shoot the thing I ran up to it to see how close I could get {remember I'd never seen one before} Apparently they arn't that fast because I could have stepped on the thing, and much larger then I imagined. Does anybody know how far there range North is? Maybe it was a rare northern meat eating evil porcupine

They are known as "survival" food because they are easy to kill. That is why you shouldn't really shoot them. If some bugger crashes his plane or gets lost it may save his life. But people do eat them and I was wondering about first hand experiences.

We had to shoot 2 of them, they were eating holes in our hunt camp. One of the first things I was taught from my Dad about hunting was to leave them alone, they are for the lost hunter, you roll them over and skin them from the belly (no quills). In Ontario they are the same as Groundhogs, but unless they really mess up your camp or your dog leave them be, they won't hurt you.

That's generally the rule i've always followed.

I had to shoot one a few years back as it was eating the floor of my hunting camp, but other than that, I let them be.

I was watching one just mozy around just two days ago while on the spot for deer. I think they are the most relzxed critter in the woods... not a care in the world.

A few years back when I had a camp in Quebec I had to shoot about 10 of them, they were eating my camp from under me. DAN>>>
