Hello group.
I have a tree stand I made of plywood.
Super Super Great stand but the porcupines started eating it last winter.
Blasted porcupines!

Any ideas on how to deter the demise of my favorite stand?

Thanks in advance

I took this photo of the evil porcupine:

could you maybe ring the tree with steel or aluminum to porcupine height?-that's what they do in hawaii to stop rats from climbing palm trees-

I haven't seen a single one all season. I think perhaps the idea of the metal around the tree may work. If not, Jays dog Nos has a desire to rid the world of the prickly buggers, maybe he'd lend him to you.

If you cover the plywood with an oil-based stain (choose a color to blend with your stand surroundings) it will stop them from eating the plywood. It has to be oil-based though as the water based / eco friendly versions won't deter them. Do it well in advance of deer season as it takes a while for the smell to dissipate (couple of months).

This will also protect the plywood form weather decay.

We did this to the plywood floors of our treestands and the porky's moved on to other sources of food. Cheers
