Porky-pines!

We used to have lots of them...Not so much anymore...Only ever saw a fisher kill once...The fight made a perfect circle in the snow...Round and round they went till the porky bled out from the nose.

I've tried grilled rack of porcupine. Couldn't get the first bite down, tasted like you'd licked a tire. Not saying I don't believe you.
Well I never tried grilled rack, but I did try grilled thighs and it was delicious, and I’m stew! That said I tried grilled ground squirrel and it was awful… but in stew it’s different!

My experience is similar to Jay's. I damn near lost a dog to a porky. Beagle/terrier. She just would not give up a fight. Her face looked like Jay's dog, and she also had quills in her side, and legs. They were still coming out a year later, and she limped for two years.

That and the prickly buggers like to chew on the buildings.

I have a personal war on them here, and regular patrols with the old Cooey.

We had to dispatch a porcupine yesterday. I’ve had a horse get quills in its fetlock once. Expensive vet bill. We had 3 heifers and one cow get quills this year. Extra work I’d rather not have. Quills are deadly if not removed. They can make their way into an animals brain and kill them. We used the old 16 gauge Ithaca to dispatch this one.

You can call them in I've done it a few times, early October is the best time. But you better have a gun or a stick handy, a ameris porcupine is not to be taken lightly.

Yes I once heard them making all kinds of noises like that one night when a pair of them were trying to enter a lean-to shelter to get treats and, I assume, salt.

Growing up in ON, my parents property seemed to be a magnet for Porkies. My dad hated them for killing his maple trees.....so we dispatched them whenever we came across them. Never tried eating one........but this thread has got me curious to try one.

Anyone into parasitology on this thread?

Porcupines have to be one of the most parasitically infested, wormiest mammal's on the face of this earth?!!

Good Lord.

I would suggest if you eat them you better check what comes crawling out of your rectum. Seriously.

And those poor doggies. Once they get that porcupine hate in their head, you have a training/ obedience problem. Even with the best of dogs.

Every time I go north I hope to encounter one or at least find a roadkill. I'd love to use the quills for crappy floats
I'll have to remember to stop and grab some quills for ya next one I see.

We used to use large canada goose feathers when growing up for light floats. Bit of resin to seal, and add rings to it. Used this set up between lily pads for great rainbows in BC.

I'll pay the shipping and add a bonus for your time. Not sure if actually buying the quills presents a legal issue or not. They're not a game animal where I'm at

In addition to tires etc … they have a great appetite for hydraulic hoses … cost my cousin dearly when one went after the hydraulics on one of his skidders. They may be innocuous little creatures but they can be expensive little pricks.

One of my relatives was a radio teck. Seen the fiberglass repeater shelters on mountains chewed through, the costic potash batterys with the top eaten down to the point of leaking all the way around. Couldn't have had any wiskers left after that. And has had to replace coax cable that was stripping clean to the top of a 50' tower.

I’ve run into lineman telling stories about them chewing through composite hydro poles, then falling to the bottom of the pole and rotting lol

Anyone happen to know what the rules - if any - are regarding porcupines in BC? I assume they're off limits to hunting, as I haven't seen anything that says otherwise?

They're not very common here, but I've seen the odd one out hunting and hearing people talk about them making good stew makes me wonder...
Falls under schedule B wildlife.
