Hello all,

I have a few long range rifle in .308 and .223 and I've decided that I want to use my T3 Tactical as a portable easyish to carry precision rifle that can be used for plinking from 1-300m and for coyotes.

I think my dilema has more to do with optics than with shooting sticks vs bipod vs backpack to keep me on track. I'm tempted to put my SIII 6-24x50 on the rifle but it will add bulk, weight and too high a magnification for closer shots. As well I would like something with an illuminated reticle for low light situations. A 3-9 would be great for hunting but I'm not convinced it would be good for plinking because I would not be able to see bullet holes well at 100m but then I think that 4-14 like the Viper PST would be a little too bulky with all the big knobby turrets.

I have been shooting the rifle with an SIII 10x42 but I want some variable power. 10x offers a good view of the target at 100m but I think I would like a little more.

I was also considering a scope with bullet drop turrets but I think they will only offer approximations when I could just laminate a shooting card to go with standard turrents.

Does anyone have some good suggestions for how I should set up this rifle for snowshoeing / ATV / range?

I'm thinking shooting sticks to get about vegetation but they aren't too stable. Maybe a tripod?

A basic sling will do me fine.

As for the scope ... Anything between 500-1000$ I guess.

SIII1-7X24 IRMOA. least bulky profile and what I will put on my walkabout varming and hunting rifles

SIII3.5-10 is another option but for close shooting, the 3.5X maybe high????

Otherwise, all those tactical knobs get in the way. For the distances you are using, drop is not that severe. Just learn a few aiming points on the reticle and you are golden.

Has anyone used a tripod for hunting? Ex: if I were to find a good spot to call in some coyotes I'm thinking that a camera tripod or something similar with a rest at the top could be a nice stable platform that could get the rifle up out of the bushes for a better shot.

I remember seeing a picture of a rifle in an XLR chassis set up in a tripod at Super Bowl for lethal overwatch, unless it was photoshop.

I really like the 1-7, would love to put one on my crossbow. I'm surprised for the size that they are:

1) so heavy SII 3.5-10x50 14.4ozs --- SIII 1-7x24 20ozs

2) pricey - aren't these more money than an SIII 6-24? For 1/4 of the materials, smaller lenses, no exposed turrets, love the scope, but the larger ones seem like "more for the money"

I use a march 2.5 -25 x42 on my coyote rifles, if cost is not an issue then its an option, they are very nice. I have the illuminated reticle on a couple of them , I would not bother to get that option again, even on lowest power setting there is a very short time window when the illumination helps.
I rarely use higher than 15 power unless its a long shot (400-800) where there is time to set up.coyotes under a 100 I like it on the lowest setting for the most view.
I think any scope that will hold poa and magnifies in the 10-15 range is probably great for what you want to do , if you want to see your holes in targets at distance then you may need more magnification.
most of the coyotes I shoot are under 100yrds, 300-400 not uncommon and the odd one 600 and only one at 817
hope that helps.

Here's another dilemma, what power optic to use:

3.?-10 vs 4-12or14or16?

It seems that if you're willing to jump 1x from the 3 to 4 on the low end, you gain a lot of magnification on the top end. A max 10x would save me a little weight but over the 10x would be nice for plinking on the range.

That was not a photoshop. You can look at the Hog Saddle or the never Pig Saddle for a wickedly good tripod mount. I have the Hog Saddle and it rocks! For a scope the Bushnell 2.5-16x42 is a good one and can be had with the regular covers over the dials so you don't have a huge footprint to see past. I might even know here you can get one:)

This pic is from shooting steel plates at 300yards- too easy with this setup and very easy to change point of aim with a trigger release mount on the tripod.

Now that's a kick a$$ setup. How much does the rifle weigh as is?

I'll check out the Bushnell but I've sold all the previous ones I've owned because I wasn't a huge fan.

Not sure of the weigh? 11-12lbs all in. I have 7 elite scopes right now= fanboy for Bushnell :)
