Ported barrels?

I did that once, no difference, never again!

Barrel porting was all the rage a number of years ago but the trend seems to be dying out and Browning seems to one of the few manufacturers that still promotes it. I absolutely hate shooting next to a ported gun on the trap line or five stand where you line up next to each other. The shooter doesn't notice the noise but the people next to them sure do!

Well it made a big difference in my 870 tc trap when I had it done years ago
You sure would have had a hard time years ago when the old cutts choke was fixed to many a barrel. Now there is a bark
Cheers

Eh? What did you say?

I'm not that young, I remember the cutts compensator/chokes very well!

A lot of people want to believe that porting works because they paid to have it done. Regardless, no one should have to listen to that kind of noise. And that's all that most porting jobs do on a shotgun, a rifle is a different story of course.

Well then you remember they were really the first ported chokes that had a hell of a lot more bark than any ported barrel and no one gave a rats ass how loud they were we have evolved into a bunch or cry babies IMO
Honestly I don't care what you believe about ported barrels to each their own. I know what my gun acted like prior and I seen an improvement after which was my only one I had done
It is simple they are allowed under the shooting rules so either accept it or buy some good electronic hearing protection. If someone wants to use them fill their boots it is none of my business
If they were outside of the rules that would be different but they are not
Like them or not they are here to stay so might as well accept it and get some good hearing protection if it bothers you
Cheers

What’s the consensus, ported or not? Thinking of a Browning sporting clay 28”, not sure about the little holes at the end of the barrel. Thanks.

After some 46 years of shooting the three registered clay target games my observations would be as follows:
1. 80 to 90 percent of clay target shooters would say that ported barrels are more noisy than non ported.
2. 80 to 90 percent of clay target shooters would say that less noise is better than more noise.
3. A much smaller percentage of clay target shooters have been known to develop a "noise" related flinch. Double plugging has often cured the problem.
4. If the shotgun I had my heart set on was available in either ported or non ported, I would choose non ported no matter who said what about any potential advantages of porting.
5. If the shotgun I had my heart set on was only available ported, I would probably try it anyhow !! After all, we are gunnutz.

I purchased several ported Browning clays guns over the years, because the guns fit me and offered good quality for the price. But the truth is, had the same guns been available with no porting, I would have gone that route. I no longer own any ported shotguns, and I certainly don't regret that choice.

I'm not sure why you would make the assumption that I don't have good hearing protection. Molded plugs underneath electronic muffs has been my preferred ear protection for many years. And I do accept that porting is allowed in shooting events but I can chose who I shoot next to. It's actually becoming a non issue as more and more shooters seem to be moving away from porting, the fad seems to be dying out.

And cry babies? Well, try not to cry too much when you have to fork over thousands for hearing aids!

We will agree to disagree on the barrel porting.

Simple if porting is bothering you your protection is not adequate , doesn't matter how many years you have used it maybe time to look at what is out there in 2018. Dying out or coming back??? I had my gun done in the 80's
I won't be forking out any money for aids from shooting or from working in the mining industry for over 30 years.Lucky my hearing is perfect wish my eyes were 1/2 as good I have always protected my ears and yes aids are expensive since my wife wears two and has never been near any real noise especially firearms
When I am focused I hear nothing as far as the other shooter(s) goes plus as far as ones ears goes a ported shotgun is not any louder when measured than a non-ported shotgun. The difference is where the noise is distributed.
It is fine to agree to disagree
Cheers

Agreed! And anybody who is wearing double up hearing protection and is whining about the noise of the next guys porting is clearly focused on anything but the next target ahead and most definitely never stood on a trap line in Vandalia, Ohio with jumbo jets taking off and landing less than 150 yards away!!

My complaint (or my whining according to spank) is less about the actual noise than it is about the concussion emitted side ways from the barrel. For instance, if your shooting on station 5 on the 16 yard trap line and the shooter on number 4 gets a hard right target, the concussion emitted is pretty hard to ignore regardless of how focused you are. It's a bit like when the guy next to you doesn't have a shell catcher on his semi trap gun and his ejected shells bounce off of your head or gun or whatever, sure you can ignore it most of the time if your focused. My other point is that the shooter of the ported barreled gun doesn't get the blast the way the shooter next to him does so as far as hearing loss goes then no, the shooter doesn't go deaf faster than the guy with the non-ported gun obviously. When scoring sporting clays, you soon learn to stand back a ways from the guys shooting ported guns just to avoid the concussion. And as far as 747's taking off 150 yards away, that's entirely different distraction that is very easy to ignore so the analogy has nothing to do with the discussion.

So I assume you don’t shoot handicap in trap then? With 2 yards separation allowed if you’re a 20 yarder and the guys on the stations next to you are 22 yarders you are technically ahead of their muzzles and you can feel that concussion and hear the increased volume from their firing. Do you learn to tune the distractions out or just bow out?

You know what they say about assuming! :)

So, the OP asked for consensus. Near as I could count was 8 for porting and 9 for not ported. Also a couple chose not to choose. Would it be fair to say there is no consensus?

Rob!
