Here's a pic I shamelessly snagged from another forum. This pic clearly illustrates why a ported pistol at social distances and/or from a retention position is a bad idea.

Those gloves he's wearing don't look like they are for "socializing"!! He must have been concerned about some hot gas blow back...plus his outfit is a little heavy as well. I'm surprised he left his face open with all the protection he is wearing. We would be able to better see things in slow motion as opposed to one picture.

This pic is from a Tactical Response Fighting pistol course. The gloves and the camelbak are a personal thing. The important piece of evidence is the amount of gas and particulate being blown through the target. A good portion of that same gas and particulate would end up in your face directly if you were running a ported pistol, like any of the Glock 'C' series. The same can be said for any revolver being fired from retention. The cylinder gap will either be in contact with your body or directed towards your face. Until you've been that close to the target and actually dumped some rounds. You really have no idea just how much gas and debris is being discharged from your pistol. I encourage everyone to try it(with some extreme caution).
